Women’s hairstyles: pencil curls (Whitney huston), fluffy and voluminous (carried on
into the 90s, madonna) & feathered (Farrah Fawcett- actress and model, charlies
angels)
Men’s hairstyles: mullet (One of the most trendiest hairstyles, Robbie Ray), volume

maintenance and masculine, Tom Cruise)
In road: Professor could have a mullet because he is older, younger characters have
a buzz cut like Eddie. Brenda has feathered hair etc…
CELEBRITIES- Faye
FASHION- Lauren
Denim fashionable for both men and women. The outfits were for any occasion and
were either ripped, acid washed or both
Boxy blazers = shoulder pads. Seen in movies like Heathers. Showed women had as
much power as men
Neon associated with 80s. Bright and ‘look at me’ statement.
Shell suits. Popular with all genders and ages. Made of nylon. Actually pretty unsafe
and were very baggy. Matching top and bottom with bright colours and very
comfortable
More fashion trends: Scrunchies, mini skirts, bum bags, fitness clothes
In road: Images from 2017 production.
AIDS- Faye & Lauren
1981- 5 gay men found with a rare lung disease in LA. By the end of that year 270
men had had this with 121 of those men dying from the disease
1982- More cases found in gay men in California leading to this being named the Gay
Related Immune Deficiency (GRID) but later changed to Acquired immune deficiency
(AIDS). Cases were found in Europe and many charities to help were formed
1983- Female partners were found with AIDS meaning it could be spread through
heterosexual intercourse. It was also found within children. They thought it was
spread contact but then discovered it was spread through infected mothers in
childbirth
1984- Blood test and screenings began alongside hopes of finding a vaccine within
two years. AIDS was also found to be transferred by drug users who were asked not
to use/share needles
1985- 20,303 cases in the whole of the world.
1987- global program to raise awareness, first treatment for HIV, passed from
mother breastfeeding, estimate of 5-10 million cases of HIV worldwide
1988- 1st December world aids day, groundwork laid for USA national AIDS care
system
1989-142,000 reported cases of AIDS but estimated to 400,000 cases, first guidelines
to prevent PCP which is the most common cause of death
Fear mongering/propaganda -> fed on people’s lack of knowledge of spread
->Catchy, scary headlines with information how to prevent the spread in small text at
the bottom ->’A bad reputation isn’t all you can get from sleeping around’
In road: Isn’t a topic that is discussed or mentioned and no LGBTQ characters appear
in Road, however Aids was a scary and prominent illness in the 80s that was very
mysterious. Many characters hook up (not always sexually) showing they don’t really
care enough about themselves to care about this disease and it being spread around.
