Relay
What is a relay?
It is a device for switching an electrical circuit on or off, this electric switch uses a
relatively small current to create a magnetic field in a coil within a magnetic core and
this is used to operate a switch that can control a much larger current.
Relay circuit symbol
o The most used format:
It shows the relay coil as a box, and the contacts are placed close by as shown
here.

o Older format:
It describes the inside of the relay well, but this circuit symbol does’nt conform
to the latest relay circuit symbol standards.

o A format that shows a set of electrical switch contacts to change over multiple
circuits
Material:
Different materials are used on the contacts to ensure they operate well for their
intended use, to provide a reliable service

and to maximize the lifetime of the relay.

o Silver, one of the best general-purpose material for relay contacts having a high
level of conductivity
o Silver nickel, was developed to reduce the effects of pitting
o Silver cadmium oxide
o Gold, is only used for low current switching as it is not particularly robust
o Tungsten, used in relays that are intended for high voltage applications

Construction of Relay

The construction of the relay is mainly classified into four groups.

Contacts:
The most important part of the relay which affects the reliability, a good contact
gives limited contact resistance and reduced contact wear.
Bearing:
It may be a single ball which provides high sensitivity and low friction and multi
ball which is used for greater resistance to shock and gives low friction.
Electromechanical design:
This includes the design of the magnetic circuit and the mechanical attachment
of core, yoke, and armature.
Terminations and Housing:
The assembly of an armature with the magnet and the base is made with the help
of spring. The spring is insulated from the armature by molded blocks which
provide dimensional stability

Conclusions

An Electric relay is essential because it detects the intolerable or undesirable

condition with an assigned area and gives the commands to the circuit breaker to
disconnect the affected area, also it protects the system from damage.
