I. Readings/Discussions

This topic deals with specific types of relationships between variables. When two variables vary
directly, one increases when the other increases and decreases when the other decreases. The
amount you pay in T-shirts depends upon the number of pieces. As the number of t-shits increases,
the amount to be paid is also increases. The volume increases as the size of the container
increases. To describe these relationships among variables we use a language known as variation.
Translating the variation statement into mathematical equation is very challenging. If you take
note the formulas of direct and inverse variation in your previous TMLHT on illustrating variation,
then it is easy for you to interpret and write the appropriate mathematical equations of these types of
variation statements.

Joint Variation: The statement a varies jointly as b and c means a = kbc. To compute for the
a
constant of joint variation: k = , where k is the constant of joint variation.

Combined Variation: The statement t varies directly as x and inversely as y means t= .To

variation
Activity 1: Translate Me!
Write each variation statements into mathematical equation.
Examples:
1. The volume of a cubical tank V varies jointly as its length l, width w and height h.
Solution:
V stands for the volume, l for length, w for width, h for height, and k for the constant of variation.
1
This describes a Joint Variation: a = kbc. Substitute a by V, b by l and c by wh= kbc.
Therefore, the mathematical equation is V = klwh.
2. The electrical resistance of a wire R varies directly as its length l, and inversely as the square of
its diameter d2
Solution:
In the given statement #4: A combination of two types of variation which involves both the direct
and inverse. This statement describes a Combined Variation. Substituting the assigned
variables, R (resistance) to t, l length to x and d2 to y.

Finally, the translation into mathematical equation: R = k l

d
Note: In a variation statement, there must be always a constant of the variation denoted by k.

There are some real-life situations we encountered that manifest relationship or behavior of two
or more quantities being involved. The essence of dealing word problem situations involving variation
is very challenging in the sense that we can easily see it in our physical world.
In solving problems involving variation, you should consider the proper translation of variation
statement into mathematical equation considering the appropriate formula of the corresponding types
of variation you have learned in your previous lessons.

Activity 2. Joint or Combined as One!

Solve the following word problems that involve either joint or combined variation.
1. The area of triangle varies jointly as the base and height. A triangle with a base 8 cm and a
height of 9cm has an area of 36 square centimeters. Find the area when the base is 10 cm
