 CHIPKO MOVEMENT
o18th century: Bishnoi community of Rajashtan

against the will of the villagers.

China invaded the forest because it was rich
in minerals.
o 1973: Uttar Pradesh Chamoli district. Non-
violent movement to save the forest and
protect the wildlife from sport equipment
company. "Ecology is the permanent economy
– Sunderlal Bahuguna".
GREEN BELT MOVEMENT
o Founded by Wangari Maathai in 1977
in Kenya
o 51 million trees have been planted,
30,000 women have been trained
o Black feminism
o "African women in general need to know
that it's OK for them to be the way they
are – to see the way they are as a
strength and to be liberated from fear
and from silence – Wangari Maathai"
