BAGS 6316 BUILDING CONSERVATION

SEMESTER 1, SESSION 2020/2021

ASSIGNMENT 2: Essay
Task: Individual
Format: Essay of 2000 words. Use Arial font in size 10 with 1.5 spacing and 2.54 margin all around.
The essay must have a cover with your name, matric number, and essay title clear stated.
Marks: This assignment will represent 70% of your grade for this semester.
Date of issue: Tuesday, 29 December 2020
Due date: Friday, 29 January 2021 at 1800 hours in e-Spectrum. Submission must be in both Words
and PDF format.

Select one of the topics below, and an write an essay of 2000 words. A 20% range over or below the
word count is permissible. You are to indicate the word count at the end of the paper. As a class, you
decide and divide the topics, ensuring that each is selected by a maximum of only three (3) students.

1. Assessment of issues and the methods of repair in historic timber structures

3. Art Deco Architecture in Kuala Lumpur: The cultural significance of selected Art Deco
Structure in Kuala Lumpur: The clock tower in Medan Pasar, former Oriental Building,
Rubber Research Institute Jalan Ampang, former Anglo-Oriental Building Jalan Tangsi,
former OCBC Bank, former Lee Rubber Building and Odeon Cinema.
4. The University Malaya Heritage Trail: The image and identity of the early university campus
buildings (1957 – 1970)
5. Impact of World Heritage Site status on Melaka and George Town
6. Reflections on the effects of the River of Life project on Masjid Jamek Kuala Lumpur and the
immediate surrounding vicinity from the aspect of placemaking and revitalisation.
7. The issues, challenges and process of listing Melaka and George Town as a World Heritage
Site.
8. Reflection on the issues of protecting cultural heritage in Malaysia.
9. Criteria for listing World Heritage Properties under the UNESCO Convention Concerning the
Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. (Elaborate and explain each criterion
using relevant Asian examples)

The essay is assessed based on the following:

1. Abstract and keywords (10%) – an abstract of 100 words with a maximum of 5 keywords
2. Introduction (10%) – an introduction of the selected essay topic and the issues to be discussed
3. Content (60%) – the essay's body must include relevant literature on the subject matter.
Divide the body of the paper into relevant subtopics
4. Conclusion ((10%) – concludes the discussion of the essay.
5. References (APA style) (5%) – All information must be referenced and appropriately cited.
6. Text and formatting of the report (5%) - The essay has must be written in good English without
grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
