WRITING A GIVEN NUMBER AS A PRODUCT

OF ITS PRIME FACTORS

I. Learning Competency with Code

Writes a given number as a product of its prime factors.

(M4NS-IIb-67)

II. Background Information for Learners

Every composite number can be written as a product of its prime factors.

This string of factors is called prime factorization of the number. It is a process
of expressing composite number as product of its prime factors. Factor Tree
and Decomposition Method or Continuous Division are two different ways to
find the prime factors of the given numbers.

A. By Using the Factor Tree Method

To get the prime factors of the number using the Factor Tree, follow these
steps:
1. Think of two numbers that will give the product of 18.
3 x 6 = 18 (3 is a prime factor, but not 6.)
2. Think of two numbers that will give the product of 6.
2 x 3 = 6 (2 is a prime factor.)
3. Put all the prime factors together.
(2 x 3 x 3) This can also be expressed in exponential form as 2 x 3²

18 Prime Factorization

˄
3x6 18 = 2 x 3 x 3 or 2 x 32

˄
2x3
B. By using Continuous Division or Decomposition Method
To get the prime factors using Decomposition Method or Continuous
Division Method, follow these steps:
1. Start by dividing the number by a prime number divisor.
2. Write the divisor on the left hand side and the quotient below
the original number.
3. Continue dividing the number by a prime divisor until the
quotient is already a prime.

Prime Factorization
18 = 2 x 3 x 3 or 2 x 32
