EXPLORING A PRACTICE
FOR LENT
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
What we know as the Stations of the
Cross (or the Way of the Cross) has
its origins in the practice in the early church of
pilgrims walking in the footsteps of Jesus’
passion in Jerusalem. Along the way they would
stop to pray at places where a significant event
is believed to have occurred. It is thought that in
the Middle ages the Franciscans brought this
tradition to Europe. This made it possible for the
faithful who could not travel to Jerusalem to
experience in a virtual way the Stations of the
Cross by following a signposted path around the
inside / outside of the church. From the 18th
century all Catholic churches were permitted to
erect the Stations of the Cross within the church
building / grounds, hence the visual depictions
we see in our churches today, with the number
of stations fixed at 14. Of these, only 8 are
explicitly mentioned in the gospels. In 1991,
Pope John Paul II introduced a new form of this
devotion, called the Scriptural Way of the Cross,
where all stations are taken from the gospels.
There are many popular versions of the stations
available that people can pray in church, at
home, privately or in a group. A typical pattern
for the 14 stations might look like the following:
Naming of the station (e.g. The 1st Station –
Jesus is condemned to die); Response (We
adore you O Christ, & we praise you, because
by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the
world); A short reading from scripture;
Reflecting / Meditation on the particular station
and Prayer (e.g. Our Father, Hail Mary and
Glory Be..). Lent is a particularly appropriate
time to pray the Stations of the Cross.

This Lent the diocese is offering a video series,
led by Bishop Denis, with three stations each
week. The Stations can be accessed on
kandle.ie from 3pm each Friday during Lent, as
available in written format for those who prefer to
pray the stations in that way. The video
reflections are read by people from the diocese
who have been seriously impacted by COVID.


➢ Persevere in your chosen resolutions
for Lent & remember their purpose is to
bring you closer to God.
➢ Check that you have a copy of the
Catholic edition of the bible in your home
& take some time to read from it.
➢ Pick up at least five pieces of litter from
the road / countryside.
➢ Pray the Stations of the Cross.
➢ Find out how you can help a local charity.
➢ Cut down on screen time & pay attention
to the people around you.

13. Jesus’ body is removed from the cross
14. Jesus is laid in the tomb and covered in
incense.

Lord of all gentleness, You are close to the
broken-hearted.
We entrust into your care those who mourn the
loss of a loved one this day.
Surround them with your love and comfort them
in their sorrow.
Grant that they may not be overwhelmed by
their loss.
May they know the consolation and support of
the Christian community.
Give them confidence in your goodness and
strength to meet the days ahead.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN

SCOIL PHADRAIG, CUIL AN TSUDAIRE
Scoil Phadraig, Portarlington are expanding their
Autistic Resource Centre - The ARC. Due to
increased demand in the Portarlington area a
new ASD class for 6 pupils will be opening in the
school this coming September. There are 12
boys currently enjoying all the facilities / supports
in the ARC. Next September this new group will
be joining them. If you have a child who is
eligible to attend an autistic class attached to a
mainstream school please complete a school
enrolment form and send it to the school with
any relevant reports. The closing date for
applications to this class will be Wed.3rd of

Crime Prevention Unit
Gardaí are receiving an ever increasing
number of complaints in relation to
fraudulent and illegal scams. The scams
can come in the form of texts, emails,
telephone calls to your mobile or landline
or even through social media. They can be
difficult to spot as the correspondence
claims to come from a reputable
organisation such as your bank, card
issuer or even a government department
such as Revenue.
How to avoid becoming a victim:
- Be suspicious of text messages
received that claim to come from a
reputable organisation, such as a
bank or credit/debit card issuer.
- Be cautious of text messages that
prompt you to call a phone number or
visit a website to resolve an issue or
verify your details urgently.
- Do not respond to text messages that
request personal information without
first independently verifying that they
are from a genuine source.
- Never reply to text messages that
request your PIN, online banking
password, or any other password.
- Be wary about calling any phone
number, or clicking on any link, that is
embedded within a text message.
Examples of recent fraudulent messages
that have been received are purporting to
be from Revenue, Amazon, Various
couriers/delivery companies, financial
institutions, Covid-19 related among others
Gardaí would ask that we all look out for
more vulnerable persons with regards to
these scams.
Remember never click on unknown
links or divulge personal information
over the phone.
