What is Communication?
• Communication is simply the act of transferring information from one
place to another.
• Communication is sending and receiving information between two or
more people.
The Communication Process
• The person sending the message is referred to as the sender, while
the person receiving the information is called the receiver. The
information conveyed can include facts, ideas, opinions, beliefs,
attitudes, instructions and even feelings and emotions through
speech, signals, writing, or behavior.

Messages between a sender and receiver take place


using a medium/channel.

• Communication medium/Channels is the term given to the way in
which we communicate.

• There are multiple communication


channels available to us today, for
example face-to-face conversations,
telephone calls, text messages, email,
the Internet (including social media
such as Facebook and Twitter), radio
and TV, written letters, brochures and
reports to name just a few.

1. Verbal communication is when we communicate our message
verbally to whoever is receiving the message. It is of two types oral
and written.

Oral communication:
Oral communication is the communication where the message
or information exchanges by spoken words. It can be done by
both face to face and also through mechanical devices.

voice quality
emotion and speaking style

were effective ways for groups or individuals to
communicate the need for assistance or to
share information about important events.

communities.

popular method of communication, especially at
sea.

• During the 19th century, signal lamps,
newspapers, and the electric telegraph made it

more people at once.
• The telegraph played a major role in the
development of communication; in 1858, the
completion of the first trans-Atlantic telegraph

between Europe and the United States

most widely used inventions. People all around
the world still depend on TV for up-to-date
information, as well as entertainment.

• Few people realize the first computers were
developed in the early 1900s, but computer
networking didn’t become publicly available
until 1969.
• Computer networking is the biggest innovation
in the world of communication that humans
have yet to experience. Not only do computers
help people to communicate in a variety of new
ways, they also communicate with each other.

• With home computers came the innovation of
email. More convenient than a phone, email
allowed people to contact individuals or groups
anytime of the day or night without concern for
time zones or long-distance calling fees. By the
early 1990s, email was a must in the workplace.
• Today, it is still a much-used business tool.

• Social media may have had humble roots, but

more than phones; they’re mobile handheld
computers that let users communicate with the
World Wide Web just as easily as calling home.

electronic book from almost anywhere in the
world.
