Settlement and its types

Introduction
2

Frame : 1
In this material we are going to learn about
settlements and its types. It is estimated that man started
agricultural practices about 12000years back. As a
result habitats started to emerge near the farmlands.
Later, different types of human habitats developed due
to various human activities and migrations. The clusters
of permanent or temporary human habitats of different
sizes are termed settlements.
Settlements vary in size and type. They range from a
hamlet to metropolitan cities. With size, the economic
character and social structure of settlements changes
and so do its ecology and technology. Settlements could
be small and sparsely spaced; they may also be large
and closely spaced. The sparsely located small
settlements are called villages, specializing in
agriculture or other primary activities. On the other
hand, there are fewer but larger settlements which are
termed as urban settlements specializing in secondary
and tertiary activities. Human settlements can be
classified in to two, one is rural settlement and another
one is urban settlement. So we can move on to the next
page for the detailed study about settlements.

Rural Settlement

conclusion
Now we clearly learned about settlement and its types. So the clusters of
permanent or temporary human habitats of different sizes are termed
settlements. There are two types of settlement, one is rural settlement
and another one is urban settlement. We also learned what the types
of rural settlement are and what patterns of rural settlement are.
Likewise urban settlement has also different classifications on the
basis of population. These settlements are forming on the basis of
climate conditions, water availability and culture, occupation etc.
some settlements are forming on the basis of their culture and religion
and some are based on river valley plains. We can see that, there were
less population in some settlement and high population in other
settlement. So population is also one of major features of settlements,
especially in urban area. Population has major role in the formation
of settlement. So hope this material gave a good knowledge about
settlement to you.
