NORTHERN PLAINS DANCE

PRESENTS

February 26
7:30 pm

February 27
2:30 & 7:30 PM
Thank you for joining us for the second program of our
2020-21 season. The works presented here are all conceived
and created during the pandemic. Choreographers and
dancers worked with and through COVID constraints
to create this program, from working remotely with one
choreographer via Zoom to exploring movement options
that don’t include contact. It’s inexpressibly challenging
to work this way, nonetheless, we remain committed to
creative problem solving and to seeing our students and
business through to its next phase.

Our artform is held aloft by human proximity – dancers to

one another, audience members in row upon row of seats,
instructors and staff shoulder to shoulder backstage. It
is all so different now. After we lost the performances in
spring 2020, we were faced with the possibility of losing all
performances in the 2020-21 season. But we pivoted. With
every twist and turn, on an operating budget about half the size that it was a year ago,
with a furloughed staff and a million unanswered questions, we sought the possibilities
of creating beauty and connection. While we had zero audiences in the Belle for The
Nutcracker, we did have digital ticket holders in 17 states and 4 countries. We are
bolstered by the thought that our efforts are being cheered on across the globe.

We remain focused on creating as much inspiration as we can in the midst of so much

uncertainty. So many of you have stepped forward to offer financial backing, ideas, and
emotional support to us during this time. Thank you for all the ways you’ve each made
NPD an important cultural asset in our city, and now in your home – wherever it may be.
More than ever, we deeply appreciate your patronage.

We hope you, our audience, understand how important it is to continue to present new
works. Thank you for allowing the works of these choreographers to be seen.

Sincerely,

director board chair

Hollis Mackintosh Heid (director, choreographer - nest) began her training

with Delia Foley, A.R.A.D. at Ballet Arts in Clarks Mills, NY. She attended Butler University,
graduating in 2002 with a BFA in Dance Performance and Arts Administration. She danced
professionally with The Chamber Dance Project, Louisville Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Augusta
Ballet and Northern Plains Ballet, dancing roles in works by Fredrick Franklin, Lars Lubovitch,
Peter Powlus, Merce Cunningham, Andre Prokovsky, Val Caniparoli, Ron Cunningham, and
George Balanchine. As Director of Northern Plains Dance, she has choreographed 8 original
pieces for Choreographers’ Showcase and Dance+, restaged Act II of Paquita, Swan Lake,
and Giselle, and directed 13 performances of The Nutcracker and 11 original full-length
fairy tale productions. Her focus as Director has been expanding the organization’s reach
into the community through the development of various outreach programs, partnering
with local arts and service organizations, and through her artistic contributions, bringing
NPD to the forefront of the state for innovative arts programming.

If the eye is the window to the soul, then what we gaze upon day in

Choreographer’s notes

In 2020, everything shifted for our dancers. They went home one day,
and the next, they had to abruptly adapt. Unable to see friends, no
classes, missing important moments that can never be replaced. The
world changed.

Teenagers’ struggles can often be overlooked. They want to be seen.

They want to be known. This piece is their story. It’s about being okay
and not okay simultaneously.

“What is this grueling nonsense? Is it the worm crawling towards no

paradise? The night and then the day or the day and then the night?
In a world full of flamingos, this tired life, this dusty dream, and the
volcano laughing.” -bone palace ballet by Charles Bukowski

Choreographer’s notes

They come to us new and they are emphatically curious about the
world. Yet they find it difficult to leave the place where they feel safest.
And, inevitably, in their own way – they all do. This piece is an homage
to the dancers, past, present, and future, who are leaving our nest and
those who are filling the spaces they leave. This is now your story to
carry forward.

Choreographer’s notes

Imagine you are at the edge of a vast forest. A haze of smoke slices its
way through the air, filling your eyes with tears. The crackling sound of
embers nearby and the smell of singed wood fills your senses.
The forest is on fire.
In life, there are times we are thrown into the fire to face a situation we
may not want to face. If we run from it, the flames will only get bigger
and become stronger. We make the choice to face it, knowing that the
burning will bring new growth. We emerge as the fireweed. Bringing
strength, courage and transformation to a place that needs it the
most.

Choreographer’s notes

Collective Solitude is a hopeful piece based on the intense feelings

of loneliness and separation that many among us are facing. Current
events have made this issue more intense for some; still others
have spent this highly unusual time building and strengthening
communities. While both isolation and community are a natural
and inextricable part of the human condition, this new work is a
celebration of the power of togetherness and the beauty of unity.

heather Krause (visual artist - a day in the mind)’s life-long love for art has
evolved into a journey of self-discovery and a determination to pursue art as a
full time business. Heather’s diagnosis with Spinocerebellar Ataxia inspired her
to challenge herself to document her journey through artistic expression, with an
emphasis on abstract and fluid art conveying color and emotion. Adaptation and
evolution are evident in her art. Heather enjoys partnering with and mentoring
other artists as well as participating in art exhibits. She is an integral part of Arts
for Vets.

Ali Larock (visual artist - bone palace ballet) received her B.F.A. in painting
from MSU Moorhead and works in the areas of painting, drawing, and mixed
media. She has exhibited her artwork around the US for 20 years and is a founding
member of Bismarck Downtown Artist Cooperative, where much of her art is on
display. Her work can also be found at the Toasted Frog in Bismarck and the Hotel
Donaldson in Fargo. Ali enjoys teaching art through various residencies in local
schools and has worked with organizations such as North Dakota Council on the
Arts, International Music Camp, and Sleepy Hollow Theater and Arts Park. She has
collaborated with Northern Plains Dance for many years on Dance+ and the Work
of Art Dance Camp. Ali offers group art lessons, art parties, and is available for live
painting performances and commissions.

shelly sayler (visual artist - nest) is the owner of Nodakian Studios in

Bismarck, ND. She enjoys spending her time there creating all of her works as well
as tending to monthly Pop Up events with other local artists. All of Shelly’s pieces
are highly decorative, showcasing her use of sgraffito and Mishima technique,
which she likes to adapt from her paintings and sketchbooks.

dawn kopp (visual artist - facing the fire), a native of Mandan, received her
B.S. in Apparel & Textiles from NDSU. Kopp began creating mosaic work in July
2017 under the guidance of local mosaicist Molly McLain. Kopp’s love of color
theory and transforming shapes and materials into new objects combine in her
completed mosaic pieces. She appreciates mosaic art for the embodiment that
all broken pieces can be made wholly beautiful in a form slightly to incredibly
different than the original. Kopp is the CEO of the Downtowners of Bismarck, a
position she has held since May 2007. She lives on Sedum Hill in Bismarck with
three delightfully unique felines.

nicole gagner (visual artist - collective solitude) has had a fascination

with capturing prairie skies since returning to North Dakota in 2015. Her body of
work often focuses on capturing everyday moments, like veggies straight from
the garden, freshly cut local flowers, or a colorful pantry full of canned food. With
moments like these as a gateway to art through personal experience, Nicole’s
art is accessible to a wide range of individuals with different life experiences. Her
vibrant color choices and energetic brushwork are a signature of her work. Nicole
splits her time between her studio, teaching at BSC, in the community and in artist
residencies with the North Dakota Council on the Arts and Art for life. For more
examples of her artwork please visit her website: www.painternicole.com.

npd history
One of the largest nonprofit dance organizations in the state, Northern Plains
Dance stages professional public performances, operates a bustling dance school
in downtown Bismarck, and offers engaging outreach programs in area schools,
libraries and community centers. During the 2018-2019 season alone, over 20,000
people saw a performance, participated in an educational or outreach program, or
studied at Northern Plains Dance.

Northern Plains Dance’s history began with its incorporation in 1998 under the
name Northern Plains Ballet (the current name was adopted in 2007), as a ballet
training facility for students in the area. We have since expanded our offerings
to include many styles of dance and annual enrollment is at 225 and growing.
Over the last decade, more than 30,000 people have attended Northern Plains
Dance’s Nutcracker. While The Nutcracker remains the linchpin of Northern Plains
Dance’s season, Northern Plains Dance continues to build an impressive collection
of works, from classic full-length story ballets to contemporary pieces.

At the heart of the organization’s work is our mission to promote appreciation for
and access to the art of dance. From Dance on the Go!, the successful creative
movement program for preschool students, to Aging Gracefully, our dance
program specifically designed for the aging population, Northern Plains Dance
continues to delight both the young and the young-at-heart. NPD has also recently
obtained national certifications for Kindermusik and Dance for PD, a dance therapy
program for those with Parkinson’s Disease.
