Dear Parents,

We want to be transparent and timely in our communication with the Titan community about what has
transpired at school today. Yesterday afternoon, student grievances were brought to our attention in
the spirit of creating dialogue. These student issues were well-articulated by members of the senior
class who are also part of the SJJ Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee. Specifically, these
Titans expressed dissatisfaction with the school’s standards for music played by students over the
school’s PA system, as well as frustration over a proposed t-shirt. These discussions brought awareness
to the issues, but did not bring a resolution.

Following this dialogue students, through their own efforts, organized a peaceful protest which started
during second period outside on campus grounds. Upon leaving the building, approximately thirty-five
students were given a short time to gather, and then informed by Spencer Root, Administrator of
Student Affairs, that they must come inside. By not coming back into the building and staying in the
grass on the far side of the parking lot, their absence was considered unexcused, and they were asked to
leave school property in hopes that they would return home. Many students returned to class or to a
continuation of discussion inside. Those who decided to not return to the building or go home, moved
across the street to continue the demonstration on Home Depot’s property. At that point, to ensure the
safety of students, and to uphold our obligation to keep these students safe next to a busy highway, the
Toledo Police Department was contacted. Additionally, the parents of each of these students were
contacted.

As Jesuit educators, we have inherited a rich tradition to develop young men who think critically about
matters of social justice. Addressing systemic racism in our world and in our community is a deep
passion for many at SJJ. We are committed to the work of students who desire to raise awareness for
the purpose of positive change. While we do not condone disruptions to the school day, we will
continue the dialogue, embracing the opportunity to further develop young men of competence and
compassion.

Thank you for your support, and for entrusting your sons to us.

In Christ,

Christopher Knight ’78
