INTRODUCTION

Reinforced concrete water tanks are constructed for storing water. The design of reinforced
concrete water tank is based on IS 3370: 2009 (Parts I – IV). The design depends on the location of tanks,
i.e. overhead, on ground or underground water tanks. The tanks can be made in different shapes usually
circular and rectangular shapes are mostly used. The tanks can be made of reinforced concrete or even of
steel. The overhead tanks (elevated tanks) are usually elevated from the rooftop through column. In the
other hand the underground tanks are rested on the foundation.

In this project, the elevated water tank that needs to be design is basically due to the creativity of the

students. The students need to design due to the loading analysis and design the suitable size for each

structure and ensure that the structure are not fail while design. The complexity of the design are also

depend on the student whether to make a simple or hard design. This project is establish to enhance

student skills in design and to see how far the students knowledge for reinforced concrete design.
DISCUSSION

In this study, there are several structures that needs to be design and to ensure that it is not fail due
to the load receive.First and foremost,as for the slab design, the permanent loads are selfweight of
retaining wall, selfweight of slab, selfweight of tank and the volume of water. The total permanent load is
71.9 KN/m.The design load that obtain is 101.57 KN/m.The dimension of the slab is
3000x3000x200mm.For main reinforcement the As provided is 894mm^2 which is H16-225 c/c.Thus,the
deflection shows pass as its actual shows lower value than the allowable.

For the beam design, the dimension of the beam is 300x400 mm.It has a length of 3000 mm and
consists of total design load (include selfweight of beam) is 98.6 KN/m.The beam consists of a
moment,med and shear force,ved of 110.93 KNm and 147.9 KN respectively.Moreover,the main
reinforcement for the beam is for the As provided 905 mm^2 which is 8H12.Hence,for the spacing use
H8-200 c/c.The deflection for the beam also show pass due to actual has lower value than allowable.

Furthermore, the total axial force at column is 320.33 KN.The moment top and moment bottom
consists value of 41.31 KNm and 1.29 KNm respectively.Due to slenderness checking it shows that the
column is short column type. The moment due to both direction shows the same value which is 42.94
KNm.The main reinforcement of the column shows that As provided value is 1257 mm^2 at 4H20.For
the link spacing the design column shows a value of 300 mm which at H6-300 c/c.

Last but not least, the dimension of the footing is 2000x2000x400 mm.The maximum soil press
shows value of 105.6 KN/m^2 which is lower than soil bearing capacity so the design pass. The main
reinforcement for longitudinal bar shows a value of As provided 982 mm^2 at 2H25 and transverse bar
As provided value is 1473 mm^2 at 3H25.The value minimum shear force is used as a value of shear
resistance, the design shows pass as the shear resistance,Vrdc value needs to be higher than shear
force,Ved.The punching shear also show pass as the ved is lower value than vrdc.
CONCLUSION

As for a conclusion,This project really helps the student to think critically and creatively in order to
identify the suitable dimension and provide an ideal design for an elevated water tank. Moreover, this
project also gives knowledge towards student to calculate full design of the structure carefully by
ensuring the design are not fail.Establish the student awareness of the importance of design which could
effect the structure due construction phase or after-construction phase.
