ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE 10

QUARTER 1 – WEEK 6
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates an understanding of the underlying
principles in installing wiring devices.
Performance Standard: The learner independently installs wiring devices for floor and
ground fault current interrupter.
Learning Competency:
Interpret plan/drawings for the selection of wiring devices
based on the job requirement

Objectives: At the end of the lesson the student should be able to:
1. Familiarize the different parts/ contents of electrical plans/
drawings
2. Identify the different electrical devices (lighting fixtures/
outlet) needed based on the electrical plans
3. Prepare complete list of electrical devices and lighting
fixtures/ outlet (report on electrical devices)
Content:(Subject Matter) ELECTRICAL PLAN (Wiring Devices)
Learning Resources:
a. References:  K-12 TLE Learning Module on EIM Grade 10 pp. 153-157

b. Instructional Materials Printed Materials and Pictures
Procedure:
A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson
Before you proceed to the lesson/ subject matter, you must review yourself on different
electrical devices that are being used in different electrical installations specifically residential
wiring installation.
Test yourself how well you can recall your previous electrical lessons on Electrical Devices by
answering this preliminary activity.

Activity 1.
MATCHING TYPE. Match column A to column B

A B
1. A device that by insertion into receptacle A. Convenience plugs and
establishes connection between the conductor of
power outlets (plugs and
the flexible cord and the conductors connected
permanently to the receptacle. receptacles)
B. Junction Box
2. A device used to facilitate electrical splices and
joints. C. Utility Box

H. Receptacles
metal, plastic, fiber, or fired clay.
I. Connectors
8. A contact device installed at the outlet for the
J. Panel Board
connection of a single attachment plug.

9. A metal sleeve usually made of copper that is

slipped over and secured to the butted ends of
conductors in making joint.

10. A component of an electricity supply system

that divides an electrical power feed into
subsidiary circuits, while providing a protective
fuse or circuit breaker for each circuit in a
common enclosure

How well you recalled your previous lesson on Electrical Devices? Since you got above
average score (6 and above) you can now proceed to the second activity which is
called PICTURE RECALL.

If you got a score from 5 and below, it is suggested to review yourself on electrical
devices using the references stated on the first page.

Activity 2.
PICTURE RECALL. Match column A to column B.

If you got a score of 6 and above, you can now proceed to the next part of this module.
If your score is 5 and below, review the activities and familiarize the pictures of the
different electrical devices.

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

In this lesson you are expected to read accurately and understand electrical plans.
Moreover, you shall learn how to identify the needed electrical devices on a particular
electrical plan.
After a thorough study of the electrical plan you can identify and calculate the exact number
of electrical devices needed.
C. Presenting examples/instances of the lesson

Activity 3.
PICTURE ANALYSIS. Analyze the picture below and answer the question that follows.

Write at least three (3) possible causes of so-called engineering failure. Consider your
answers as solutions to the problem encountered as shown in the picture.
1.
2.
3.

You must have brilliant ideas and solutions on the picture shown! Now that you’ve
finally understood the importance of planning, you will now learn the different parts of
Electrical plans.

D. Discussing new concepts

Electrical plan is “a preplan of electrical design on a paper before the physical installation of
electrical appliances and machines in real time”.

In general, to install the electrical appliances and machines for any home or industry initially a
plan is made by Engineer. The plan is often termed as electrical plan. This electrical plan
consists of several standard symbols of electrical appliances and machines and their
interconnection. This standard electrical symbols and their interconnection convey the
information of original equipment.

For example, a small industry needs lighting system, cooling systems, protection equipment,
transformers, specific electrical machines, and cooking equipment. To install all these
equipment, the engineer will analyze the rating and number of equipment such a way that this
equipment will drive the system properly. Then, take the measurement of the building and the
machine sizes. Next, the engineer will make a design in paper. Finally, all the electrical
equipment is installed properly by verifying the preplanned design of electrical plan.

The electrical plan plays a vital role in the installation of electrical systems in real time.

Note: Study very well the electrical plan for lighting fixtures that follows.

Hidden Line indicating the location of a
Light bulb -------- switch/ lighting outlet controlling the light
bulb
S Single Switch B.R. Bed Room
1

2
S Three Gang Switch T Toilet

Important Reminders on the Locations of Switches/ Lighting Outlets on the Building:

1. Lighting Outlet is always located near the door frame, hallways, and passages.
2. The switches/ lighting outlet should NOT be covered by doors once opened.
3. The switches/ lighting outlet should be mounted 6 inches from the door frame.
4. Four to four and a half feet (4 ft. – 4 ½ ft.) should be the height of all the switches/ lighting
outlet on the building.
5. Switches should NEVER be combined with outlets.
6. Switches are assembled on utility box.
7. Every bend of conduits and every connection of conductors/ wires should have junction box
to facilitate easily the connections of conduit and splicing of wires.
8. Every switches found on the electrical plan has a corresponding utility box.
9. Although utility box and junction box are not seen on the electrical plan, they are
automatically included once there are switches and lights, because these connections
cannot be performed without the utility box and junction box.
10. Conduits CANNOT be connected to utility box and junction box without conduit
connectors. Therefore, they should be calculated although not seen on the electrical plan.

Note: Have an ample time familiarizing the electrical plan and the reminders

Activity 4.
IDENTIFYING all the electrical devices and lighting fixtures found on the Electrical Plan.
Write down all the identified electrical devices and lighting fixtures.
1.
2.

7.

After studying carefully, the reminders and the electrical plan, you must be very good in
identifying the electrical devices and the lighting fixtures found on the electrical plan.

If you failed to answer Activity 4, it is highly suggested that you may study again the
reminders and electrical plan.

To further understand electrical plans and drawings, you must study the symbols of
outlets and their corresponding locations on the plan. You may use the following
