Video Example EXAMPLE 3 Suppose that a ball is dropped from the upper observation deck of a
building, 350 m above the ground.

(a) What is the velocity of the ball after 4 seconds?

(b) How fast is the ball traveling when it hits the ground?
SOLUTION We will need to find the velocity both when t = 4 and when the ball
hits the ground, so it's efficient to start by finding the velocity at a general time
t = a. Using the equation of motion s = f(t) = 4.9t2, we have

v(a) = lim f(a + h) − f(a)

h→0 h

𝑣(𝑎) = lim
ℎ→0 ℎ
4.9{(𝑎 + ℎ)2 − 𝑎2 }
𝑣(𝑎) = lim
ℎ→0 ℎ

4.9{𝑎2 + ℎ2 + 2𝑎ℎ − 𝑎2 }
𝑣(𝑎) = lim
ℎ→0 ℎ
4.9{+ℎ2 + 2𝑎ℎ}
𝑣(𝑎) = lim
ℎ→0 ℎ
𝑣(𝑎) = lim4.9(ℎ + 2𝑎)
ℎ→0

.
(a) The velocity after 4 s is

v(4) = 9.8*4 =39.2 m/s.

(b) Since the observation deck is 350 m above the ground, the ball will hit the
ground at the time t1 when s(t1) = 350, that is,

4.9t12 = 350.
This gives the following. (Round your approximation to one decimal place.)

EXAMPLE 5 Find an equation of the tangent line to the parabola y = x2 − 8x + 9

at the point (1, 2).

SOLUTION From the previous example, we know the derivative of

f(x) = x2 − 8x + 9 at the number a is f '(a) = 2a − 8. Therefore the slope of the
tangent line at (1, 2) is f '(1) = 2(1) − 8 = -6. Thus an equation of the
tangent line, shown in the figure, is

y −2 = -6 x -1)or
y =-6x+8

Video Example EXAMPLE 6 A manufacturer produces bolts of a fabric with a fixed width. The cost
of producing x yards of this fabric is C = f(x) dollars.

(a) What is the meaning of the derivative f '(x)? What are its units?
(b) In practical terms, what does it mean to say that f '(2000) = 15?
(c) Which do you think is greater, f '(350) or f '(500)? What about
f '(6000)?
SOLUTION
(a) The derivative f '(x) is the instantaneous rate of change of C with respect to x;
that is, f '(x) means the rate of change of the production cost with respect to the
number of yards produced. (Economists call this rate of change the marginal cost.)
Because

f '(x) = lim ΔC
Δx → 0 Δx
the units for f '(x) are the same as the units for the di"erence quotient ΔC/Δx.
Since ΔC is measured in dollars and Δx in yards, it follows that the units for f '(x)
are ---Select--- per ---Select--- .

(b) The statement that f '(2000) = 15 means that, after 2000 yards of
fabric

have been manufactured, the rate at which production cost is increasing is $ 15 per
yard. (When x = 2000, C is increasing 15 times as fast as x.)

Since Δx = 1 is small compared with x = 2000, we could use the approximation

ΔC ΔC
f '(2000) ≈ = = ΔC
Δx Δx

and say that the cost of manufacturing the 2000th yard (or the 2001st) is about
$15 .

(c) The rate at which the production cost is increasing (per yard) is probably lower
when x = 350than when x = 500(the cost of making the 500th

yard is less than the cost of the 350th yard) because of economies of scale. (The
manufacturer makes more efficient use of the fixed costs of production.) So

f '(500 ) > f '(350 ).

But, as production expands, the resulting large-scale operation might become
inefficient and there might be overtime costs. Thus it is possible that the rate of
increase of costs will eventually start to rise. So it may happen that

f '(6000) > f '(500).
