EXAMPLE 3 Evaluate the limit below and indicate which properties of limits are
used at each stage.

7x2 − 7x − 2
lim
x → ∞  4x2+ 3x + 1
SOLUTION As x becomes large, both numerator and denominator become large,
so it isn't obvious what happens to their ratio. We need to do some preliminary
algebra.

To evaluate the limit at in nity of any rational function, we rst divide both
numerator and denominator by the highest power of x that occurs in the
Video Example
denominator. (We may assume that x ≠ 0, since we are interested only in large
values of x.) In this case the highest power of x in the denominator is x2, so we
have

7x2 − 7x − 2
7x2 − 7x − 2 x2
lim   =  lim
x → ∞  4x2 + 3x + 1 x → ∞  4x2 + 3x + 1
x2
7 2
7 −   −
x x2
 =  lim
x → ∞  4 3 1
+   +
x x2
7 2
lim  7 −   −  2
x → ∞  x x
 =
3 1
lim  4 +   +
x → ∞  x x2

1 1
lim  7 − 7 lim   − 2 lim  2
x → ∞  x → ∞  x x → ∞  x
 =
1 1
lim  4 + 3 lim   +  lim  2
x → ∞  x → ∞  x x → ∞  x
7 − (No Response) − (No Response)
 =
4 + (No Response) + (No Response)
 =  (No Response) .
A simple calculation shows that the limit as x → −∞ is also (No Response) . The
gure illustrates the results of these calculations by showing how the graph of the
given rational function approaches the horizontal asymptote y = (No Response) .
