727-0 Bus Cable Coaxial cable with yellow PVC sheath in accordance with the Ethernet
(Triaxial Cable) specifications (Ethernet cable) or with IEEE 802.3. This coaxial cable is
surrounded by solid aluminium shielding and an additional outer jacket of PVC.
755 Transceiver The transceiver is used for linking a node to the triaxial cable.
It receives its power supply from the connected node via the transceiver cable.
Terminator Each segment must be terminated at both ends with a 50-ohm terminator.
3.2 m, 10 m, 15 m, 20 m, 32 m
and 50 m = maximum length of transceiver cable
Repeater Bus segments can be linked with repeaters. They are connected to the bus by
the normal transceiver cable and the transceiver.

(Yellow Cable)
Design of the The bus cable is a double-shielded coaxial cable. Unlike the normal
727-0 Bus Cable Ethernet bus cable for office and laboratory applications (Yellow Cable), it is a
three-wire conductor. The second shield also acts as a vapor barrier, making the
cable suitable for buried installation.
In addition to the solid copper inner conductor and a multilayer outer signaling
cable, that must not be connected to the structural ground, there is another
(outer) shield. The construction of its outer conductor and, above all, its grounded
shield render the cable impervious to high frequencies and immune to outside
interference.

10 BASE-T 10 BASE-T is a network with star topology standardized in IEEE 802.3 and, like
Industrial Ethernet, uses the CSMA/CD access method.
Industrial Twisted Industrial Twisted Pair is based on the 10 BASE-T network standard. The
Pair and various network components have been optimized for industrial use. The
10 BASE-T transmission medium is a 2x2 or 4x2-wire S/STP cable with a characteristic
impedance of 100 ohms.
For Industrial Twisted Pair the RJ45 connector has been replaced by the sub-D
connector system, which is mechanically more robust and less susceptible to
electromagnetic interference.
Principle of Operation The fiber-optic cable is a dielectric waveguide with a core of low-attenuation,
optically transparent material.
Because of its greater bandwidth and superior light injection, the 62.5 micrometer
fiber type is recommended.
This fiber is also recommended for the FDDI.
SIEMENS
Design of the TPTR The industrial twisted-pair plug-in transcelver TPTR enables data terminals with
an AUI interface to be connected to the industrial twisted-pair network.
The transceiver has two interfaces: an AUI interface for connection of a data
terminal and an ITP interface for connection of the industrial twisted-pair cable.
The AUI interface is a 15-pin sub-D plug connector and the ITP interface a 15-pin
sub-D socket connector.
Operation of the The small dimensions of the TPTR enable it to be plugged directly into
TPTR the AUI interface of a SIMATIC NET communications processor. It increases the
mounting depth of the data terminal by approx. 40mm.
The MINI OTDE optical transceiver is used for connecting a data terminal to an
optical network and for configuring a fiber-optic link between two terminals.
The MINI OTDE can be plugged directly into the AUI interface of the data
terminal.
It can be permanently installed by means of the wall mounting. In this case, the
MINI OTDE is connected to the data terminal via a 727-1 drop cable.

50-Ohm Terminator Each segment is terminated at both ends with a terminating resistor (50-ohm
terminator).

transceiver.

Up to 2 Repeaters Segments can be linked with repeaters. There may be no more than two
between repeaters in the signal path between two data terminals.
2 Nodes 1 remote repeater pair counts as 1 repeater under this rule.
Triaxial Cable The signal path between two data terminals must not pass through more
max 1500 m than 1500 m of triaxial cable.
Fiber-Optic Cable The signal path between two data terminals must not pass through more
max. 1000 m than 1000 m of fiber-optic cable.
Longer distances are theoretically possible, but must be specially calculated.
Each repeater is connected with two transceiver cables and two transceivers or
one transceiver and one optical transceiver.
Avoid Ring Forming a loop in a network using two repeaters is not allowed.
Closing!
Maximum Distance The maximum repeater configuration permitted by IEEE 802.3 (3 coaxial
Covered: or 2 fiber-optic links), allows a maximum distance of 2800 m between two
2800 m data terminals without the need for detailed calculation of the network.

For installation in protective conduits with interruptions and when using protective

The ground conductors must be connected to the interior grounding system of
the building.

Redundant link
Application The SIMATIC NET link modules for lndustrial Ethernet enable flexible, cost-
effective configuration of Ethernet networks in accordance with the IEEE 802.3
standard with both fiber-optic and copper wire cables.
The link modules provide several connection facilities in one unit. The OLMs
(optical link modules) have both electrical and optical ports. The ELMs (electrical
link modules) are a more inexpensive version with only electrical ports. The link
modules can therefore be used for configuring both line topologies (with OLMs or
ELMs via fiber-optic or industrial twisted-pair (ITP) cables) and redundant ring
topologies (with OLMs via fiber-optic ports only).
Design and The electrical ports of both modules are implemented with 9-pin sub-D

implemented with redundancy.

Industrial Ethernet ring structures with switching technology and fast medium
redundancy.
These OSM/ORM rings have a transmission speed of 100 Mbps.
One ORM is required for each optical ring. Up to 50 OSMs can be used.

Load isolation Load isolation keeps local data traffic local because the switch only passes out
data intended for nodes in other subnets. This is done by filtering the data
according to the MAC address.
Another advantage of this system is that an error in one subnet cannot spread to
the other subnets.
FDX Advantage:
Because no collisions occur in FDX, data throughput is increased to twice
the rated transmission speed for the network, that is 20 Mbps for standard
Ethernet and 200 Mbps for Fast Ethernet.
Network coverage is extended as far as the performance limits of the
trasmission and receiving components used will allow.
This aspect is especially beneficial when using fiber-optic cable.
It is not necessary to use full duplex everywhere in the network.
You can also operate only a few connections between certain nodes in FDX
mode, for example the connection between a server and a hub/switch or
connections between switches.
