Lesson Carpentry: Identify Equipment
1 and Materials
Formwork
for Installing

In this module you will learn skills related to CARPENTRY. You will
have a first-hand experience in educational activities leading you to
become a successful learner.

What is In

This Module is a useful document which you can use to add more
knowledge and skills that you acquired in the previous year. It includes
instructions and procedure on how to perform the different learning
outcomes. The unit of competency contains the knowledge, skills, and
attitudes required on how to Install Formwork Components for Carpentry
NC II course. You are required to go through a series of learning activities
in order to complete each of the learning outcomes of this module

Notes to the Teacher

This module contains information to guide learners in self-paced
learning. It is done in simplified manner in order to help the learner
achieve the goals designed to complete the competencies developed
in the K-12 program. Illustrations are made clear so the learner
maintain interest while improving skills in carpentry.

What is It

Now that you have you known these materials for formwork? Have
you tried using one of them? Did it match its use the way you used them?
These materials are commonly used in making bridges, houses, buildings,
and other structures. Plywoods come in different types like marine plywood
which is more durable than ordinary plywood. Phenolic boards on the other
hand are of the most advantaged in making formwork because of its
characteristics of having high resin finish that concrete cement doesn’t stick
on it.
Good lumber is widely used in making formworks and studs because
of its durability. Using power tools or equipment in making formworks like
Jigsaw and Circular saw makes it easier. Scaffolding is essential in
supporting formworks for it not to collapse. Lumbers are usually used as
studs, yet in its scarcity, metal scaffolding with the use of clamps is widely
used because of its durability and highly reusable. However, in some
countries in Asia, like Hong Kong is a known bamboo user in scaffolding as
an alternative for metal pipes due to its toughness and it is light. But for Do-
it-Yourself projects we only depend on the availability of the materials.
What is More

Activity 1.1 Helping you understand more of the

lesson, let us try this activity by providing the names of
the materials and equipment.

What I Have Learned

The most commonly used materials for scaffolding are metal pipes,
lumber and bamboo. Ordinary plywood or Marine plywood, are used for
making formworks. The use of phenolic boards may be of good advantage,
however, the price is quite expensive. Nails and clamps fastens the
formwork.
Power tools are mainly used by most carpenters in more complex formwork
for it is easier to use with less time and effort exerted. Most importantly, the
working plans and drawings should be indispensable as guide in making the
details of the formworks.
What I Can Do

Your neighbor is building their house.

Identify at least five necessary materials and its uses in building a house.
