3-11. If P(X∈A) = 0.4, and P(X∈B) =0.6 and the intersection of sets A and B is empty,
(a) Are sets A and B mutually exclusive?
(b) Find P(X ∈A’).
(c) Find P(X ∈ B’).
(d) Find P(X ∈ A ∪ B).

Answer :
a) Iya , karena tidak ada nilai himpunan yang sama antara himpunan A dan Himpunan B.

b) 𝑃 (𝑋 ∈ 𝐴’) = 1 − 𝑃(𝑋 ∈ 𝐴)
𝑃 (𝑋 ∈ 𝐴’) = 1 − 0.4 = 0.6

c) 𝑃(𝑋 ∈ 𝐵’). = 1 − 𝑃(𝑋 ∈ 𝐵)

𝑃 (𝑋 ∈ 𝐵’). = 1 − 0.6 = 0.4

d) 𝑃 (𝑋 ∈ 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) = 𝑃(𝑋 ∈ 𝐴) + (𝑋 ∈ 𝐵)
𝑃 (𝑋 ∈ 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵) = 0.6 + 0.4 = 1

3-15. Let X denote the life of a semiconductor laser (in hours) with the following
probabilities: 𝑃(𝑋 > 7000) = 0.45 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃 (𝑋 ≤ 5000) = 0.05

(a) What is the probability that the life is less than or equal to
7000 hours?
(b) What is the probability that the life is greater than 5000
hours?
(c) What is 𝑃(5000 < 𝑋 ≤ 7000)?

Answer :
(a) 𝑃(𝑋 ≤ 7000) = 𝑃 (𝑋 ≤ 5000) + 𝑃(5000 < 𝑋 ≤ 7000)
Dimana 𝑃 (5000 < 𝑋 ≤ 7000) = 1 − 0.05 − 0.45 = 0.5
Sehingga didapat 𝑃(𝑋 ≤ 7000 = 𝑃 (𝑋 ≤ 5000) + 𝑃(5000 < 𝑋 ≤ 7000)
= 0.05 + 0.5
= 0.55

(b) 𝑃 (𝑋 ≥ 5000) = 𝑃(𝑋 > 7000) + 𝑃(5000 < 𝑋 ≤ 7000)

= 0.45 + 0.5
= 0.95

(c) 𝑃 (5000 < 𝑋 ≤ 7000) = 1 − 0.05 − 0.45

= 0.05
