A Semi-Detailed Lesson in Mathematics

Grade 10

I. Objectives
With 90% proficiency, after the discussion the students will be able to:

a) identify percentile for grouped data

b) Calculate the value of the specific percentile for grouped data

II. Content and Materials

A. Topic: Percentile for Grouped Data

B. References:
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/331231097_Lesson_Plan
_for_Percentiles_for_Grouped_Data
https://spiral.ac/sharing/6dhdahh/quartile-decile-percentile
C. Materials: powerpoint presentation, flash cards, chalk, chalkboard

III. Procedure

A. Preparation
The students are tasked to recall the formula in getting the value of nth
quartile and decile for grouped data .
Quartile Decile
B. Motivation
Activity: Arrange my Thought !
Divide the class into four groups. Each groups will be given two words
which corresponds to a two representative each group that will be called
to front and arrange themselves. After 2 minutes, the representatives of
each group should present the thought they had formulate with the
collaboration of other groups.

C. Presentation

Let the students create a sentence using all the words they have formed
by applying the previous lesson.
Percentile is a measure of position that divides a distribution into 100
equal parts.

Same as calculating the quartiles and decile , P k class is the class interval
where the (kN/100)th score is contained . In computing percentile for
grouped data the formula is :

Where :
LB = Lower Boundary in the Pk class
N= total frequency
Cfb = cumulative frequency of the class before Pk class
Fpk = frequency of the Pk class
i = size of the class interval
K= nth percentile; where n= 1,2,3,…97,98,99
For example:
Solve for the 25th and 90th percentile of the Mathematics exam scores of
50 students
Scores Frequency
46-50 5
41-45 7
36-40 12
31-35 8
26-30 11
21-25 7

Let the students identify the missing value on the table and solve for P 25
and P90.

Scores Frequency LB <cf

46-50 5 45.5 5

41-45 7 40.5 45

36-40 12 35.5 38

31-45 8 30.5 26

26-30 11 25.5 18

21-25 7 20.5 7

Solution :

P25 = 29.43 P90= 45.5

D. Comparison and Abstraction

Group Activity:
With the same groupings, each group will be tasked to find value of the
asked percentile then identify which quartile or decile position is equivalent
to it and show solution. The data will be flash in the PowerPoint
presentation that is found below .
Group 1: P60 Group 2: P75 Group 3: P20
Class Interval Frequency
61-65 9
56-60 6
51-55 8
46-50 5
41-45 5
36-40 3
31-35 8
26-30 4
21-25 2

Solution :
P60= D6= 52.38
P75= Q30= 57.58
P20= D20= 33

E. Generalization
How do we compute the value of the of the nth percentile ?
In computing the value of the nth percentile, we must follow the following
formula :

F. Application
Students will be call randomly and whoever will be called has to solve for
the percentile value P13, P45, P30,P23 and P99.

<cf LB Frequency Class Interval

60 99.5 3 100-109

57 89.5 8 90-99

49 79.5 14 80-89

35 69.5 16 70-79

19 59.5 10 60-69

9 49.5 9 50-59
Hence, P13= 57.3 , P45= 74 , P30= 67.6, P23=63.82 and P99 = 106.7
IV. Evaluation
Calculate the 50th,25th, 34th percentile of the following grouped data.

Class Interval Frequency

86-90 2
81-85 8
76-80 13
71-75 15
66-70 18
61-65 5
56-60 7
51-55 2

Hence, P50= 71.5 , P25=66.47 and P34= 68.22.

V. Assignment
Calculate the 15th,21st , 32nd, 48th , 18th and 69th percentile of the following
data.
Class Interval Frequency
151- 160 12
141-150 8
131-140 10
121-130 6
111-120 11
101-110 7
91-100 9
81-90 4
71-80 13
