RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver

Introduction to the feature

The RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver feature reduces the uplink own cell (intra-cell) interference, which enables higher HSUPA peak
rates.

RAN1308 Benefits
End-user benefits
This feature benefits the end user as follows:
higher HSUPA throughput possible in a typical mixed data and voice scenario with 2 ms TTI HSUPA user
high Ec/No for a high data rate 2 ms TTI HSUPA user possible, while keeping the noise rise within the planned limits

Operator benefits
This feature benefits the operator as follows:
balanced downlink/uplink cell capacity without the need for 4 Rx antennas
improved coverage, for example, for AMR calls existing in parallel with peak rate E-DCH transmissions

RAN1308 Functional description

The RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver feature cancels interference caused by users mapped on the E-DCH with 2 ms TTI (RT or NRT
services). These users are called interference cancellation (IC) users. The interference is removed from the signals of all other users (that is, non-IC users).
The interference is reduced for non-IC users, but not for IC users.
IC users:
IC users are those mapped on the E-DCH with 2 ms TTI. This does not guarantee that the interference from all of these users is actually
cancelled. Usually the users with the highest power are selected first.
They benefit only indirectly from interference cancellation due to reduced UL transmit power of non-IC users.

2/28/2021 RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver
Non-IC users:
all 10 ms TTI E-DCH users, and all DCH users
benefit from reduced interference
Interference cancellation is a non-linear detection method within the more general class of multi-user detection algorithms.
The antenna signal is first received with a rake receiver or with a frequency-domain equalization (FDE) technique. Turbo decoding is performed to obtain the
E-DCH with 2 ms TTI signals. The decoded data is used to reconstruct the original 2 ms TTI signals, which constitute interference for other users.
Reconstruction includes turbo encoding, spreading, and modulation. Finally, the reconstructed signals (that is, the interference for the other UE) are
summed up and subtracted from the original antenna signal—non-IC users’ signal (residual signal) is derived this way. After that, all other users’ (non-IC
users) signals are demodulated on the residual signal. As a result, all other users’ signals (which have been received from the residual signal) benefit from a
lower interference level. This improves coverage and capacity for the cell.

2/28/2021 RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver

The RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver feature is based on the assumption that there is no (or very little at most) real-time traffic mapped
on the E-DCH transport channel with 2 ms TTI.
Inter-symbol interference arising from the user's own signal because of multipath propagation can be alleviated with feature RAN1702: Frequency Domain
Equalizer. Features RAN1702: Frequency Domain Equalizer and RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver can operate in the same cell at the

RAN1308 System impact

Interdependencies between features
For baseband resource usage with RAN1269: 4-Way RX Diversity feature, refer to Dimensioning WCDMA RAN: Flexi BTS Baseband.
Feature RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver is supported in 2-Way RX Diversity cells, but is not supported in 4-Way RX
Diversity cells.
RAN1470: HSUPA 2 ms TTI is a prerequisite for RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver.
RAN1645: HSUPA 16QAM:
There is a clear potential for using interference cancellation techniques to ease the use of 16QAM in HSUPA. Feature RAN1308: HSUPA
Interference Cancellation Receiver does not need the RAN1645: HSUPA 16QAM.

Impact on interfaces
This feature impacts interfaces as follows:
Iu: No impacts on protocols. Higher UL data rates possible as a result of improved air-interface.
Iur: No impacts on protocols. Higher UL data rates possible as a result of improved air-interface by HSUPA over Iur.
Uu: No impacts on protocols. Higher UL data rates possible.
Iupc: No impacts
Iub: Control of this feature in the RNC requires changes in the NBAP private messages. Higher UL data rates possible.
O&M: Monitoring and licensing of this feature is needed.

Impact on MML commands

There are no MML commands related to this feature.
This feature is managed by the parameters listed in the section.

Impact on network and network element management tools

This feature impacts the network as follows:
impact on coverage dimensioning: improved coverage in the UL
impact on capacity dimensioning:
higher peak data rates for the E-DCH users
increased cell throughput
increased cell capacity
balanced DL/UL cell capacity
impact on baseband dimensioning: activation of the RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver feature limits the number of Release
99 active users.

2/28/2021 RAN1308: HSUPA Interference Cancellation Receiver
Impact on system performance and capacity
This feature impacts system performance and capacity as follows:
large peak data rates for E-DCH users
improved coverage in the UL, for example, for AMR calls existing in parallel with peak rate users
increased cell throughput
increased cell capacity
balanced DL/UL cell capacity
