Robbie, a seventh grader at
Mount Morris, will be among
spellers from across west-
ern New York who will com-
pete next month in the 2021
Scripps Western New York
Regional Spelling Bee pre-
sented by The Daily News and
The Livingston County News.
Other spellers from the
GLOW region include Grace
Clark of Bee-lieve Home
School Association in Bergen,
Aaric Luce of Le Roy Junior-
Senior High School, Warren
Palermo of Mount Morris El-
ementary School, and Brenna
Ackerman-Gay of Warsaw
Middle/Senior High School.
Aaric’s favorite word,
which may not come as a
surprise, is “rectangular.”
It’s the word that won the
eighth-grader the spelling be
at Le Roy Junior-Senior High
School.

“It really signified my win
and I was really excited about
it,” he said.
Brenna is returning to the
regional bee for a second
straight year. Also returning
from last year’s bee is Karson
Baker, a seventh-grader at
Bolivar-Richburg Junior-Se-
nior High School.
Schools have registered 10
champion spellers for this
year’s bee, and several more
could join them before the
March 6 event. Students in
grades six through eight were
eligible.
Like many things in the
past year, this year’s spelling
bee will be a bit different from
past bees.
Instead of the traditional
competition on stage at an ar-
ea school auditorium, the bee
will be administered through
an online platform, with an
online test determining who
will be eligible to represent
western New York at the Na-
tional Spelling Bee.
The online test will keep
students and family safe and
avoid a large gathering during
the ongoing COVID-19 pan-
demic.
The National Spelling Bee,
which was canceled last year
due to the pandemic, is also
seeing changes this year.
