BEFORE YOU WRITE

Exercise 1 : Imperative Sentence


Rewrite the sentences in imperative.
Example: We have to revise the essay.
Revise the essay. (Imperative sentence)

1. They should get up early.


2. The branches and trees are removed.
3. You can park in this street.
4. He should taste this delicious food.
5. The trees are transported to the saw mill.

Exercise 2 Simple Passive Voice


Rewrite the sentences in passive voice.
Example: The information should be given. (passive)
They should give the information. (active)

1. The letters was delivered by the postman.


2. The paper works must be submitted by the students.
3. The tomorrow’s meeting will be organized by parent
association.
4. The song is beautifully sung by the singer.
5. The globalization topic was explained by the lecturer
yesterday.

Exercise 3 Action Verb


Arrange these letters to build correct words. The missing verbs in
the sentence are action verbs which are commonly used for
procedure text.

Exercise 4 Procedure Paragraph


Look at the sequence of pictures below. Underneath, there are a
number of sentences describing how breakfast cereal is made. The
sentences are in the wrong order. Write them out in the correct
order using the sequence of picture to help you.

How Breakfast Cereal is Made

a. It is stored in the silos.


b. These are woven into biscuits.
c. The wheat is harvested from the field.
d. Each biscuit is baked until brown.
e. It is cut and formed into thin strip.
f. The grain is cooked to soften it.
g. It is packed ready to be eaten.
h. The wheat grain is transported to the silos.

Procedure text is a text that is intended to show a process in


order. Its social function is to describe how something is
completely done through a sequence of series.
In procedure text, sequence markers such as first, then, next,
finally are often used to link the sentences. Look at the following
procedure paragraph.

A topic sentence Planting vegetables like chili is a nice activity in


our spare time.

AFTER YOU WRITE


As a procedure text is similar to an explanation one, take a look at
the other sample writing of the explanation text below. The
explanation text is answering the question word “how” and “why”.
Such question words need detail explanation on it relates.

The Stages of Writing an Essay

When you would like to write an essay, there are some


stages that you should undergo. First, the topic, subject, or
questions should be thought about carefully. Then, a note should
be made from ideas. After that, any books or journal should be
noted that have been recommended. Next, the list should be
added any other books or articles.
Clear notes should be written from the reading. When the
notes have been finished, they should be looked through.
Afterwards, the content of the essay should be decided on how it
is to be organized or planned.
The first draft should be written in an academic style.
While doing this, the use of colloquial expressions and personal
references should be avoided.
Finally, the bibliography should be compiled in an
alphabetical order. At the same time, a bibliography should be
added to the end of the essay.
