1. DEFINE OPD
OPD means an Out Patient Department of a hospital. It is the section of the
hospital where patients are provided medical consultations and other allied services.
The importance of OPD is such that it is considered one of the most valuable
departments of hospital.
Out patient means patients who are not admitted to the hospital. These are
basically synonymous to doctor’s chambers. It is the same as taking an appointment
and visiting a doctor’s chamber, just here, the “chambers” are under the hospital’s
banner and one takes the appointment, on reaching the hospital, from the reception,
whereas you might have to take prior appointment while visiting a doctor in a chamber.
The hospital’s doctors have a particular schedule as to who sits in the OPD on
which day, one will have to consult the the doctor in charge on the day of the visit. For

example, if you're having chest pain, you will be asked to consult the doctor in the
cardiology OPD. Whereas, in a private chamber scenario, when you have chest pain,
you choose which particular doctor’s chamber you want to visit.
2. TYPES OF OPD
a. Centralized: Grouped together in the form of OPD complex. Consultants
from different departments come to this area for OPD work.
b. Decentralized: Outpatient care is provided in respective department of
hospital
c. GENERAL OUTPATIENT: All the patients other than emergencies who
report directly to the OPD
d. EMERGENCY OUT PATIENT: A person given emergency medical care
for condition which is real or perceived emergency.
e. REFFERED OUTPATIENT: A person referred to an OPD by his attending
physician for specific Diagnostic/treatment procedure.
3. FUNCTIONS OF OPD
To provide specialist diagnostic, medical opinion to outpatients.
To treat patients on ambulatory basis or domiciliary basis.
Screen patients for hospitalization.
Follow up treatment of discharge patients.
Training and education of medical, paramedical and nursing staff.
Collection, compilation and analysis of medical records.
Provide primary healthcare by means of health education immunization
well baby clinic Voluntary Counseling & Testing Centre (VCTC) for
HIV/AIDS.
