PREHISPANIC SOURCE

MATERIALS FOR THE

PHILPPINE HISTORY
AUTHOR
WILLIAM HENRY SCOTT
- - was born on 10 July 1921, in
Detroit, Michigan, where he was
christened Henry King Ahrens.
- - was a historian of the Gran
Cordillera Central and Prehispanic
Philippines.
2
⬗ He personally rejected the description
anthropologist as applying to himself.
⬗ Scott observed the Igorot people of the
Cordillera region had preserved elements of
pre-colonial culture to a greater degree, and
over a wider area, than could be found
elsewhere in the Philippines.
⬗ Scott's dissertation was published that year
by the University of Santo Tomas Press as
Prehispanic Source Materials for the Study
of Philippine History.

What is code of
kalantiaw?
- Datu Bendehara Kalantiaw, third Chief of
Panay, born in Aklan, established his
government in the peninsula of Batang,
Aklan Sakup. Considered the First Filipino

JOSE E. MARCO and THE CODE OF KALANTIAW

⬗ Jose E. Marco is one of Philippine

historiography's greatest mysteries.
⬗ His most famous inventions—such as
the “Code of Kalantiaw”  and “La Loba
Negra” —are still in some textbooks.
⬗ He was one of the most successful
forgers, having created many fake
documents in a career that spanned half
a century.

8
- All the false history that Marco had spent a lifetime to fabricate was
thoroughly debunked just a few years after he died but his greatest hoax,
Datu Kalantiaw, still has believers today who will likely defend the
authenticity of their imaginary hero until their final breath.

- Jose Marco continued to supply scholars with hundreds of additional pages

of forgeries until his death.

The Criticism of William Henry Scott to the Code of Kalantiaw

⬗ The book was supposedly discovered in

the possession of a Don Marcilio Orfila of
Zaragoza, Spain in 1839.
⬗ Existence of the priest named, Jose Maria
Pavon.
⬗ There is no written documents about the
great Kalantiaw.

10
⬗ He proved that the works of Jose E. Marco were not true
and only a hoax
⬗ He proved that the Code of Kalantiaw is not true and
should not be considered as a part of our history.

11
CODE OF KALANTIAW: HOAX
In 2004, National Historical Institute (NHI) Resolution No. 12 “Declaring that Code of
Kalantiao/Kalantiaw has no Valid Historical Basis" called for:

⬗ The official affirmation that the Kalantiaw Code is a twentieth-century fraudulent

work by Jose Marco,
⬗ The President of the Philippines cease to honor retiring Supreme justices and
other international dignitaries with the ‘Order of Kalantiaw’,
⬗ The revoking of Executive Order 234, which recognized Datu Bondahara
Kalantiaw as "The First Philippine Lawgiver" and declared a Hall of Fame and
Library to be constructed in his honor in Batan, Aklan as a national shrine.
This NHI resolution was approved by the Office of the President in 2005.

History would be an excellent
thing only if its true.
