visited in the hospital.

14. "He was born in Moscow," she says. She said he was born in Moscow.

15. "We didn't have dinner there," the boy says. The boy said they didn't have dinner
there.
16. "I was so thrilled and excited by the opera," Stella says to Maurice. Stella said to
Maurice that she was so thrilled and excited by the opera.

17. "When I came Jane was playing the piano," says Kitty. Kitty said that when she
came Jane was playing the piano.

18. "When the doorbell rang I was writing a letter to John," says George. George said
that when the doorbell rang he was writing a letter to John.

Ex.1. (A B) Change the following sentences into direct.

The teacher asked Tom: “Do you come to school by bus or on foot?” The teacher
asked Tom if he came to school by bus or on foot.

2. A man stopped me in the street and asked: “Have you got a watch?”  A man
stopped me in the street and asked if I had a watch.

3. The teacher asked us: “Do you understand the question?” The teacher asked us if
