Course Description

This is an introductory course in statistics designed to provide students with the basic concepts of data
analysis and statistical computing. This course introduces principles of statistical analysis and methods of data
collection, presentation and summarization of qualitative and quantitative data. The course describes the
fundamental concept of descriptive and inferential statistics, types of data, sources of data, presentation of data
through various tables and charts and summarization of data using various descriptive measures. Moreover, the
course discusses the principles of probability theory and random variables. Different probability rules are also
illustrated e.g. addition rule, multiplication rules, conditional and marginal probabilities, Bayes Theorem. After
discussing some general ideas of random variables, the course focuses on a detailed discussion of some standard
probability distributions including Binomial, Poisson and Normal Distributions.

Course Objective

This course aims to enhance student’s skills in analyzing qualitative and quantitative data. At the end of this
course, students should be able:
 To Demonstrate their understanding of descriptive statistics by practical application of quantitative
reasoning and data visualization
 To apply various descriptive statistical techniques for analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
 Present and summarize data through various tables and graphs.
 Use SPSS (statistical software) for analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
