Rewriting Sentences Using Reflexive Pronouns

To begin this activity you will need to write the following sentences on the blackboard.
Suggested answers are in parentheses, so be sure to leave those out.

1. Martha combs her own hair. (Martha combs her hair herself.)
2. The issue will resolve on its own. (The issue will resolve itself.)
3. Jake practices soccer alone. (Jake practices soccer by himself.)
4. The students did the entire project without any help. (The students did the entire project
themselves.)
5. We like to make ice cream at home without any help. (We like to make ice cream at
home ourselves.)
6. I can fly an airplane on my own. (I can fly an airplane myself.)
7. Driving can be difficult, so you shouldn't try it without help. (Driving can be difficult, so
you shouldn't try it yourself.)

Give students a few minutes to rewrite each sentence using a reflexive pronoun and remind
them to not change the meaning of the sentences. Finally, either collect the new sentences to
review or ask for volunteers to write their answers on the blackboard. Be sure to discuss and
correct any reflexive pronoun use errors.
You can extend this activity by asking students to create their own non-reflexive pronoun
sentences to exchange with classmates, who must then rewrite the sentences to include a
reflexive pronoun.

Wait, Is That Right?

One way to learn to use reflexive pronouns correctly is to develop the ability to identify if they
are being used incorrectly. This team game requires a bit of preparation. The first step is to
write each of the following sentences on an index card. Be sure to number the cards and leave
out the answers in parentheses.
