➢9.30 Breakout Session 1 - Team Plan – Action Items – Videos

➢10.00 Breakout Session 2 - Reynolds Number

➢10.30 Break

➢10.45 Breakout Session 3 - Pressure at Height

Assignment

➢Format : Individual Report

➢Allocation : 10%

➢Deadline : Monday 1st March 09.00

➢ Read the brief - ensure questions within brief are

addressed within the Discussion section of report.
Report Structure

➢Remember Report Briefing (Week 2!)

➢Pressure - graphs would be useful!
➢ Include a stepped out example of both calculations
(one Reynolds and one Pressure) in an Appendix
Other Information

➢ Video on Canvas The Reynolds Number Rig

➢ Video on Canvas Reynolds Number Brief
➢ Website links on Canvas
Purpose
Flow Patterns – Laminar, Transitional and Turbulent

Why is Reynolds number important in industry?

• Pipe design, mixing vessels, packed beds such as chromatography columns in
purification of biotech products, etc

• Emerging area in pharma sector is continuous processing - small pipes

Activity One
Plan of Action (Canvas – Breakout Rooms)

➢Does the group have the necessary documentation present to start the
practical (steam tables, etc)?
➢Brief for Lab
➢Relevant Equations/units e.g. Find the Reynolds Number Eqn
➢Is interpolation required?
➢Risk Assessment
➢Flow patterns - look at Video on Flow Demonstration!
Activity Two
Reynolds Number Calculation

Existing Rig operating at a flow rate of 20L/min at 15°C using

water and a pipe diameter of 0.05m

Equations/Units
Activity Three
Pressure at Height Calculations
Equations/Units etc
