Tempo refers to the speed (fastness or slowness) of the beat in a song. It is also
called the speed in music. Some songs have fast tempo and some have slow.
Tempo makes a song meaningful. Songs that have fast tempo are joyful while
songs that have slow tempo are sad or restful just like the lullabies.
Musical speed can be compared to animal movements.

Conducting in music
Conducting movements are important to convey meaning and shape by the
conductor to his or her performers. The leader of a band or orchestra use both
the hand gestures and a baton to set the tempo of music.
Below are the different kinds of conducting movements which are based on
speed.

Conducting movement
Bring your hand in a chest level position. Count
1 by placing the hand downward and count 2
hand in upward motion.

Conducting movement
Place right hand in front (chest level). Start by
moving ® hand downward count 1, then mov-
ing hand to the right side, count 2, and contin-
ue by moving your hand upward, count 3.

Conducting movement
Repeat the first hand movement shown in Fig-
ures 1 and 2. move your right hand inside left
count 2, move hand outside right, count 3, and
move upward count 4.

Direction: Match the words with their correct meaning.

Remember:
Tempo- the rate of speed at which a musical composition is played or sung
Andante - to be performed or sung in a slow tempo
Moderato- to be performed or sung in a moderate tempo or neither fast nor slow
tempo
Allegro- to be performed or sung in a fast tempo.
Direction: Spot a picture that moves fast or slow. Put a (/) check on the picture that
shows fast movement and a (x) cross for those that show slow movement.
