41.2 Bare pipe shall be biast cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP10.
413 Field joints and fittings shalt be cleaned before primer is applied. Oil,
grease, dirt, loose mil scale, weld slag, loose rust and loose paint shall
be removed in accordance with SSPC-SP1, SSPC-SP2 or SSPC-SPS3.
42 Primer Application
4.21 The primer shall be applied immediately after completion of surface
preparation. The ends of each length of pipe shall be left uncoated
back 150 mm to permit field welding, Means shall be provided to
prevent primer trom being applied in this weld lane area.
42.2 Joints and fittings shall be given a uniform coat of primer prior to
application of the tape.
42.3 Primer shall be allowed to dry to a tacky consistency before tape is
applied. No foreign matter shall be allowed to come into contact with
the primed surface
424 Primer application shail be limited to the amount of pipe which can be
wrapped the same workday; otherwise the pipe must be recleaned and
reprimed.
425 Valves and fianges shall not be primed
4.3 Tape Application
43.1 Primed surfaces shall be moisture free prior to application of tape to
avoid any possibility of moisture entrapment.
43.2 Straight runs of pipe shall have the tape spirally wrapped. The tape
shall overlap half its width as it is applied, resulting in double wrap
coverage.
433 Field joints shall have one and one quarter turns of tape over welds
prior to wrapping the joint. Then beginning at a point 76 mm back on
existing wrap, apply tape spirally to a point 76 mm past the beginning
‘of the wrap on the next length. The tape shall overlap half its width as
itis applied, resulting in double wrap coverage.
43.4 Fittings, bends, etc, shall be wrapped with tape spirally epplied and
overlapped half its width, resulting in double wrap coverage.
Couplings and unions shall have one and one quarter turns of tape

is made with adjacent pipe wrap.
436 Air blisters in tape shall bo punctured and a patch applied over the
puncture
A 4.3.7 Risers, trom underground pipe, shall be wrapped with tape to a
minimum of 280 mm above finish grade {top of paving) and terminated
with two full laps of tape. Above ground wrapping tape shall be
covered with 0.010 inch thick stainless steel jacket banded with
stainless steel bands.
5.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE
5.1 Surface preparation, priming and tape wrapping are subject to inspection and
approval by Buyer. The costing shall be ficld tested for leaks or holes after
placement in the trench before pipe is buried, by means of an electric holiday
detector set at 8,000 or 10,000 volts D.C.
5.1.1 Holiday detector with brush(es) or coil springs shall be used in
accordance with the Manufacturer's recommendations.
5.1.2 In no instance shall the detector voltage exceed that which is just
necessary to Cause sparking to the pipe from the detector electrade as
it is moved across a halltapped, double-coated and out-wrapped
calibration section artificially punctured for test purposes
5.1.3 The travel rate of the holiday detector shall not exceed one foot per
second, nor shall it be allowed to remain stationary while the power is
on,
52 Defective locations shalt be clearly indicated by a circular chalk mark or cross
immediately upon discovery by visual examination or by the holiday detector.
6.0 REPAIR AND PATCHING
A 6.1 Holidays detected shall be repaired by removing loose or disbonded material
from around the area of the holiday. Sharp points, burns or rough edges shall be
Meathered' smooth. The exposed area of steel shall be repaired using the system
specified in Paragraph 4.3.3 for joints. The tape shall be twice the size of the
holiday. It shal! be worked down onto the surface of the steel so that no voids or

624 Sealant shall be molded to completely cover the exposed anode wire
connection area, and shall extend a minimum ot 51 mm (2 inches) over
the adjacent undamaged coating. Sealant shall completely surround
anode at point of attachment.
625 A section of tape shall be cut to cover the connection area plus a
