TEL: 400 - L5: Assignment - Reflection Journal

After researching more this week about NGO’s and other government-based and non-

government-based funding for my ‘Wholesome Parenting’ innovation, I found a few different

potential options that might work for funding my idea. Watching the video, What is an NGO?,

helped me to gain a better understanding of Non-Governmental Organizations, how they work

and how they operate. After the video, I was interested to learn more about how NGO’s get their

funding so I did some research and found that “As non-profits, NGOs rely on a variety of sources

for funding, including membership dues, private donations, the sale of goods and services, grants

from other non-profits and government funding” (Folger, 2020). It was helpful to see the options

for funding especially if you’re interested in not having an affiliation with the government in

your innovation.

Some of the potential funding options I found included funding from philanthropic

organizations in and out of Los Angeles, government grants, the (small amount) of revenue that

will come in from the low-cost class fees and I was also thinking that I might try and scout out

some angel investors that I think might be interested in my mission. Through my research I

found two organizations that, I believe, would be interested in providing funding for my idea.

The first organization is called ‘BBB (Better Business Bureaus) Wise Giving Alliance’ and is a

national, online platform for both organizations and donors to make it easy for donors to have a

clear understanding of who and what, exactly, they’re donating their money towards. The other

resource I found was called ‘California Community Foundation’ which “provides grants to L.A.

County organizations working in arts, education, health care, human development, and

neighborhood revitalization” (lapl.org). I would use these organizations, along with searching for
grants and other government aid, to hopefully receive enough donations and funding to follow

through with my idea to fill the gap when it comes to Parent-based knowledge in Los Angeles

County. Many people, no matter their demographic, happen to either be parents currently or want

to be a parent at some point in their lives and through this common thread I would focus my

selling points when advertising my idea to others.
