The Birth of a Question

Hello and welcome to our class on the birth of a question. Did you know that your
questions, like all living things, are born? Did you know that every question you ask had
an original form, a time and place of birth, and a reason for being?

No matter how simple, mundane or even trivial a question might seem, it is part of a
deep and original questioning that begins early in every human life, continues to the
end, and has endless ripples of consequence.

If you can trace any current question to its original form and the circumstances of the
moment of its birth, you will discover one of the engines that drives the life of the
questioner. This can be done, and done with a single tarot card.

A single card can be the vehicle that brings you directly to the time, place and
circumstance of the moment in your life that your question was born. It can show you
the original form of your question, how deeply important that question is to you, and
how it asks itself again and again in different forms. When you learn how to do this,
your questions may give you revelations instead of answers.

Do this:

Ask a question.
Write it down.
Review it. Are you satisfied with what you asked?
Modify your question if you want to.

Clear your deck, shuffle it, and draw four cards any way you wish.
Lay them face-down in a square.
Close your eyes, breathe and relax...
Turn the cards face-up.
Pick the one that makes the strongest impression on you at this moment.
Set the others aside, face-down

Examine the card carefully so you can see it clearly with your eyes closed.
Open your eyes and put your right hand above the card, palm down.
Breathe deeply three times.
Let your breath return to normal, remove your hand and sit back.
Close your eyes again, and for a moment, float in a meditative state...

Let the image of the card arise in your mind’s eye.

Then silently ask your question.

Now let the image of the card carry you back to a time and a place in your own
life, to a particular moment and circumstance that you remember.

Experience the moment in its fullness.

Take your time.
Be there. Be there completely.

When you are done, return slowly and open your eyes, but stay in a meditative
state. Remember your experience and write it down.

The moment in your own past that you just experienced is both the time your question
was born, and the reason it was asked for the first time. Can you tell how this experience
is the origin of your question? If it is not immediately clear, contemplate your
experience. The relationship between your experience and your question will reveal itself
in time.
