We extend to you a very warm welcome to the 2021 Brisbane State High
School rowing regatta, in State High’s centenary year.
We are looking forward to an outstanding day of competition, camaraderie
and sportsmanship as we continue decades of high-quality rowing.
Perhaps today’s racing will see achievements that form part of the great
history of rowing in the GPS competition, perhaps crews will break their
own personal bests; what is certain is that the great dedication of parents,
coaches and teachers will continue its proud tradition of supporting our
rowers to do their best.
Each time we row, we understand the hours of preparation that have gone into the training by
and support of our students. We know that our students are aiming to do their best and to build on
their previous performance. We know they are looking to go one better each time and we applaud
this commitment to improvement.
Thank you to the many supporters who make these events possible for our boys. Your efforts
ensure that these rowers experience the magic of this sport.
I would like to extend best wishes—from the Brisbane State High School community—to all

Welcome to the 2021 GPS regatta season! This year is
Brisbane State High School’s centenary year and the school’s
98th year of rowing. State High has a proud tradition in rowing,
and this year we are continuing to develop the unique culture
that is State High Rowing. This culture is driven by the school’s
ethos and strategic plans, especially in extending learning
experiences beyond the classroom. State High is also unique
compared to other schools in our competition: we are only
one of two schools that does not have boarders; the only state
high school; and the only co-ed school in the competition. This provides specific
opportunities and challenges for the rowing program, especially with the shed
operating year-round.
It is humbling to see the enormous support from parents and coaches, and the
tremendous effort that has gone into hosting this regatta. I would like to extend a very
grateful thank you to all those involved, and indeed to the wider rowing community, for
their support of State High Rowing. I look forward to some great racing and, indeed, a
great 2021 season.

coaches, to the first 2021 GPS rowing regatta.
As a 2021 GPS Rowing Vice-Captain and the
coxswain of the First VIII, I am proud to wrap up my
school rowing experience coinciding with State High’s
centenary year. Our Executive Principal, Mr Wade
Haynes, reminds us that “100 year milestones don’t
come around often.” Over the many years, State High
Rowing has relied on resilient and dedicated students along with the extensive
effort of parent volunteers to ensure our program continues and grows. We
have ebbed and flowed, just like the river, with one of our greatest rowers—Mr
Bo Hanson—taking the time to lead us through some goal setting during our
January camp. Working together as a team has begun to show results. For
the first time in many years, State High will field a Second VIII in 2021; a new
experience that many current and past rowers have never seen. Our aim is to
ensure this growth continues well into the future for the next 100 years.
Rowing, for me, is more than just a sport. My flame was sparked during
orientation week, where I was taken by the hand by a group of student leaders
and given my first opportunity to feel the rhythm of the erg. It was, however,
in Year 8 when my rowing journey began. At that point in time, I wanted to
be a rower and wasn’t even aware that coxswains existed. I did all the same
ergs as the others, all the same running; however, I soon discovered that my
150cm, 40kg frame wasn’t built at that time for a rower. So hand-picked for
the coxswain seat, I jumped into the boat without any knowledge of how to
steer—embracing the leadership challenge—and I haven’t looked back since.
I’d like to think I’ve come a long way since that first session, however, boat
casualty record might hint otherwise. But with my second year in the First VIII,
regardless of how many challenges the river has thrown at me, I can say with
conviction that I do everything I can to help all of the boys in the program and
I trust they do the same for me. They are my extended family and the shed is
my second home.
It is a pleasure for State High to provide hospitality at this event, all during
a time when gatherings and competitions are at the mercy of the COVID-19
pandemic. Thank you to the volunteer coaches, parents, staff and students
here today, helping everything run smoothly, regardless of what school you are
supporting. I hope you enjoy the taste of success and continue to build the
camaraderie around your teams.
Rowing at State High
Brisbane State High School was founded
on 1 July 1921. The school was originally
located in the old Normal School on the
corner of Adelaide and Edward Streets in
Brisbane City and moved to the current site
in South Brisbane in 1925.
The July 1923 School Magazine
reported: “Some two months ago, at the
investigation of Mr Robson, a Rowing
Club was formed. The membership fee is
one guinea which entitles the members
to use the Brisbane Rowing Club’s boats
every afternoon between 3.30 and 5pm.”
Thereby the connection with a Brisbane
Rowing Club commenced, an association
that has flourished and been repeated in
the late 1950s, 1960s and 1970s with the
Commercial Rowing Club. Mr Brian Robson
was the first of many dedicated Rowing
Masters and remained a member of staff at
State High until 1946.
State High won the ‘Head of the River’ for
the first time in 1925. In 1926, the first of many

of a new boat for the sum of 58 pounds. The
new boat was put to good use in 1927 and
the O’Connor Cup again graced the Assembly
Hall. The 1927 School Magazine reported:
“The feats of our rowing crew this year have
considerably raised the prestige of the school
in the sporting sphere.” The O’Connor Cup
was again proudly housed at State High after
victories in 1928 and 1932.
Arthur Polkinghome, the second seat in
the victorious 1928 crew, started a trend in
1932 when he coached the winning 1932
crew. This trend of past students returning to
coach school crews has been the backbone
of State High Rowing ever since. The list of
past students who have returned to the State
High Shed is endless.
State High emerged as a force in GPS
sport after the war years. The 1948 School
Magazine reported, “During the past year
the school has gained a prominent position
in GPS sport by winning in quick succession
the Football Cup and the Athletics Cup. By
winning the 1948 ‘Head of the River’, the First
Crew won for the school the most coveted
of all trophies, the O’Connor Cup”. In 1950,
the First Crew placed second, “inches behind
Brisbane Boys’ College” and third in 1951.
State High did not participate in rowing
between 1952 and 1956, re-entering the
competition with a First VIII in 1957. Two
members of that crew, Bill Sole and Steve
Hinchy, went on to dedicating most of the
rest of their lives to rowing. Bill Sole became
a long-term staff member, devoting unlimited
hours to the sport, while Steve Hinchy
went on to become President of Rowing
Australia and managed and provided medical
expertise to Australian rowing teams at
Commonwealth and Olympic games, and
World Championships.
In 1963 the P&C

purchase of State High’s

Potestas. In order to enhance
their collection and to retain a
significant piece of State High
memorabilia, the Potestas
was donated to the Maritime
Museum at South Bank in
1993, on the 30th anniversary
of its launch. 1963 was the
