This document describes two scenarios for modeling feature offsets from true position in an assembly. In Scenario 1, all features are modeled at their maximum material condition (MMC) and maintain a clearance fit. In Scenario 2, the internal thread is modeled at its least material condition (LMC) while maintaining the MMC condition for other features, resulting in additional radial clearance for the thread but no interference. Modeling features at MMC ensures interference-free assembly at all conditions between MMC and LMC.

THREADED HOLE OFFSET FROM TRUE POSITION CLEARANCE HOLE OFFSET FROM TRUE POSITION Notice the fastener thread and the clearance hole do not interfere and instead are line-to-line or, more accurately, surface to surface.
ASME B1.1 governs UN series threads. Class 3
threads at MMC are designed to have a surface- to-surface clearance fit while Class 1 and 2 threads at MMC are designed to have neutral space (gap) between the thread surfaces.
THREAD ENGAGEMENT & CLEARANCE HOLE/FASTENER FIT
▪ PREVIOUSLY SHOWN OFFSETS FROM TRUE POSITION ARE APPLIED SCENARIO 2: INTERNAL THREAD MODELED TO LMC, ALL OTHER FEATURES MODELED TO MMC THREADED HOLE OFFSET FROM TRUE POSITION (ADDITIONAL “BONUS” TOLERANCE APPLIED) ASME Y14.5 governs threaded hole position based on pitch diameter. Therefore, the additional “bonus” tolerance allowed at LMC is equal to the total pitch diameter tolerance. The additional “bonus” radial offset will be equal to half that total pitch diameter tolerance = 0.5(Max Pitch Diameter – Min Pitch Diameter). For this case the additional “bonus” radial offset = 0.5(0.2211 - 0.2175) = .0018. Finally, the threaded holes’ total offset from true position will be .007 + .0018 which equals = .0088. Notice the fastener thread and the clearance hole still do not interfere and are once again line-to-line or, more accurately, surface-to-surface.
Yes, the threaded hole is now offset an
additional .0018. However, no interference is generated on this side because the radial size of the threaded hole has increased by the same amount. This fastener will still assemble interference-free in this position and at this material condition. MMC Yes, the threaded hole is now represents worst case and so if we perform offset an additional .0018. our tolerance stack-up analysis at MMC, However, this only generates then we can be certain the assembly is also additional clearance on this side. valid at LMC and anywhere in-between. This is a critical benefit of understanding MMC and it is why it is focused on so heavily.
