Write short notes on occlusal registration materials.

The registration of the occlusal of patients is an essential element of everyday clinical practice.
An interocclusal record is a precise recording of a masillomandibular position and is used in
mounting the dental casts on the articulator. When a patient possesses an adequate number of
teeth and a stable intercuspal position the most accurate method of articulator is to occlude the
two opposing casts with no intervening record, otherwise we run the risk of introducing
unnecessary error, the use of a material to record the occlusal is necessary when:

 The remaining teeth are not sufficient to provide a stable record.

 The occlusal relationship, ether horizontal or vertical, is to be altered.
 Interacrh records are required for removable patient and complete dentures- not
always for partial if there are enough teeth.
 One quadrant of teeth or more are prepared.

The required characteristics of the interocclusal registration material are:

1. Accurate in recording of the interocclusal space.

2. Rigid enough to ensure stability of the casts and to avoid distortion during transfer to
and registration in the laboratory.
3. Dimensional stable.
4. Good handling properties and acceptable time, which allow correct positioning of
mandible and setting times.
5. Minimal resistance to closure
6. Non toxic and acceptable to the patient- biocompatible.
7. Ease of disinfection
8. Cheap
9. Long shift life.

The commonly available and used materials are:

1.Thermoplasitic waxes,

2- zinc oxide eugeual paster

3- acrylics

4-elastomeric material,

5-plastic of paris.

Thermoplastic waxes are quick and easy and inexpensive to use and can be modified in the
mouth. Their major drawbacks are that of distortion at different temperatures due to their high
coefficient of thermal expansion, incomplete and uneven softening, base plate was is not
recommended for recording ICP because it is too flexible, however little hard was ( moyco
beauty wax) is widely advocated to record both interocclusal and positional relationship
(muzzay, suith, watts, Wilson.1999)

Zing oxides pastes are relatively inexpensive and easy to sue but cannot be modified. Today
studies have showed that eugeual fill zinc osides were more accurate and dimensionally stable
than those containing eugenol ( baltharar- harty. 1981) this material is accurate and rigid but is
difficult to use on its own due to its adherence to teeth and likelihood of fracture on removal,
usually it is used as corrective washes in the modification of was templates, the depth of the
indentations produced in the paste should be in minimal- why?

Acrylic resins can be used in conjunction with laboratory fabricated copings prepared over
metal-plated dies of preparation. They are relatively rigid but are not completely dimensional
stable. However, clinical trials of their reliability and accuracy have not been published. Bailey+

Finally, elastomeric materials: are poly vinylsilxine. Or polyether based, they are clinically
advantageous in accurately recording patterns of closure and avoiding mandibular deviation
because of their lower viscosity than the other materials. Limited clinical experience with the
elastomeric materials suggest that they may have a role to play particularly for positional
( lateral excucsive and protrusive) records ( murray smith et al 1999) .

However a study by Oclert, Eriksson et al 2000 showed that the accuracy of vnyl polysiloxanes
reinforced by a tray is superior to that of the record rims for complete dentures and among the
most accurate for RPD and for fixed orthodontics, reinforcement was not necessary.

Further clinical research would clarify the optimum materials and techniques in occlusal
recording, A------ however a good practice to verify the accuracy of mounting, using foil
shimstock to compare occlusal contacts interorally and on articulator.
