This is one of the numerous presentations that would be coming out from
the stables of suletech consulting as regards SAP FICO.

I will basically be looking at discussing the FICO (Finance & Controlling) sub
- modules.

I will also discuss what obtains in the real world , using practical /real –time
scenarios as much as possible

How to answer interview questions to ensure engagement will also be
discussed

1. How many servers do you know?
(b).How many servers does your company have?
C). How many servers are in SAP landscape?

These (3) questions can come in any form. They could even come
differently from the ones listed above. The most important thing is to identify
the keyword, which is SERVERS in SAP.

There are basically 3 servers in SAP

These servers are otherwise known as landscapes, with which the ERP is
deployed or implemented.

The 3 servers are (1) Development Server, (2) Quality Server, (3) Production
Server

How the servers interact –
PRODUCTION SERVER

In the development server, this is where consultants perform their day to
day configurations and customisations based on the clients business plan or
needs.

The development server is one client on its own and thus has a client
number which is assigned to it

This is also known as the GOLDEN CLIENT

When configurations/customisations are made and saved in the
development server, a transport request (TR) IS generated which describes
the configurations made and is also saved

Transport request (TR) are means or vehicles by which configurations are
transferred or moved to the quality server for testing.
How the servers interact – QUALITY
SERVER

The quality server is populated with the help of transport requests.

Once a configuration has been made in the development server , for instance, the
consultant will move this to the quality server, using the transport request.

The quality server is another client with its own unique client number. For example ,
202, 802, 402 etc

The consultant logs into the quality server, wouldn’t find the configuration he made,
so he has to input SE9 OR SE10 from the development server to pull up the transport
requests and copy the change/configuration to be tested or moved to the QS

Once he’s done copying from the DS, he then goes back to the Quality server ,
selects SCC1 transaction code and pastes the copied transport request and then
selects run.

The system will run the command and notifies the consultant when its done of its
success or not.

When its successful, then the consultant is then able to view the configuration in the
Quality server and thus can begin the necessary testing activities

Note, it’s the consultant that is responsible for moving the transport request from PS to
QS
How the servers interact –
PRODUCTION SERVER

Once the testing activities have all been completed, then its time to move
to the production client /server

This is the client where the end users carry out their daily operations and
usage of the ERP

The consultant will write, usually, send an email to the Basis team informing
them testing activities have been completed and for them to move the
configuration to production.

So lets be clear, while the consultant moves the transport request from
development server to quality server, he doesn’t do so from quality to
production. Rather the basis team , on the advise of the consultant, move
the TR from quality to production.

These in essence, is how the different servers interact within the ERP.
Pay Attention: what obtains in real-time,
3 or 4 servers?

During an interview, you may be asked if there are 3 or 4 servers/ clients. Or you may come
across discussions where some mention 3 servers while others mention 4, well, I will make it
clear now;

There are essentially 3 main servers /clients in SAP.

However, as it so often happens in real world, its possible that before the implementation
or project begins proper, maybe a number of consultants needed are still being recruited.
So what happens? Do the already employed consultants just wait on and drink tea? No

What happens essentially, is, there’s a request for a sandbox client, which is a client where
pseudo development takes place, in this sandbox, consultants try out or refreshes their
configuration skills in readiness for the main tasks in the development server.

So, sometimes, some people say we have 4 servers. That is sandbox, development, quality
and production clients.

But essentially, we have 3 servers.
