Before we start...
All tutorials in this e-book are based on using a Medium Donut Pom Maker
& 100 % wool yarn in aran weight.

Aran weights from different brands vary in thickness, so take this as a guide
and test if you think your yarn is especially chunky or thin.
The yarn used in the tutorial is Rico Essentials Superfine Merino,
available at Pom Maker.

You can use a Small Pom Maker for a baby animal.

Adjust accordingly by using DK weight or wrapping less yarn for each step.

All wrap counts are based on aran weight, so if you use DK yarn with a Medium
sized maker, you will need to slightly increase the wrap counts.

Use waxed linen thread or a strong, non-slip thread to tie the pompom
very tight and securely.

We recommend using 2 scissors - sharp large scissors that can cut thick layers
of yarn and small scissors with sharp tips for fine trimming.

A felting needle is used for fixing the ears and refining features.
We recommend a 'rough' type as it felts more quickly.

These tutorials don't explain the basic method of using Pom Maker.

You can use Medium Pom Maker to make animals of approx. 7 cm.
Or you can use Small Pom Maker to make animals of approx. 5.5 cm.
The final size can vary depending on how much yarn you wrap and
how much you trim. More wrap will make larger pompoms.
More trim will then reduce the size.
You may have less details when you make a smaller pompom.
They can look like baby animals compared to the larger ones.

6 POM MAKER TUTORIAL - PANDA POM POM

Start with one half of the Pom Maker. You'll be holding 2 arc pieces held together.

1 Make the Nose

Wrap 10 counts of black

at the position shown above.
Wrap the yarn closely together
and on top of each other.
Imagine a small circle
as you do it.

2
Face - Part one

Wrap white yarn on top.

Tip: after wrapping a few

layers above the nose, place
your thumb and index finger
where the eyes will be.
Wrap around your fingertips
with white yarn, leaving
indents on both side in the
white yarn, as shown in the
diagram.

3
Eyes

The big black patches around the eyes are

what makes a panda a panda!
Fill in the hollow area where your finger tips were
with black yarn, making a little bulging shape.

Wrapping 20 – 25 counts is a good guide.

4 TOP Face - Part Two

Now wrap more white yarn to complete the

face. Wrap until everywhere is well covered
with a few layers of yarn.

Note:
As you cover the eyes, you need to remember
the top end of the head, so you can add
the ears to the correct position in the next step.

5 Ears

Place your index finger

on the 'Top' end
and wrap black yarn
over your finger,
creating loose and
longer wraps.
Wrap approx. 15 – 20 counts.

Now you've completed the first half.

6 The second half

(back of the head)

Take the other half of the Pom Maker (another 2 arcs).

Wrap it entirely in white yarn.
Roughly match the volume of the first half.

Bring the two wrapped halves together .

7 Finishing the pom pom

Bring the two halves together.

Put your donut frosting on each side.
Cut and tie.
Take out the Pom Maker pieces.

8 Trimming
The panda will be looking quite rough at this stage. We're now ready to trim it!

First trimming tip

The nose is the highest point of your panda face. (point a)
Don’t trim the nose yarn short until the last minute
when you can trim just a little bit to refine it.

Second trimming tip

The eye area (area A) needs to be trimmed low.
Start by cutting a big chunk of yarn in the eye area.
Then trim the top and side of the head into a shape resembling a trapezoid,
narrowing towards the top. Trim according to the diagram shown below.

area point
A a

Once you form this basic face shape, you can gradually refine it more as you wish.

9 Felting the ears

Trim the ears into a round shape.

Use the felting needle to bond the yarn together to form the ears.

Push the felting needle through several yarns from the side and repeat until
all the yarn is held together well.
Do this slowly and watch your fingers! Wear a thimble if you have one.

A few points to note! narrower towards

Felt the yarn
from the side

Keep the nose point high

10 Finishing touches
Continue to refine your panda until you’re happy with it!
Trim yarns that stick out with small scissors – especially the boundaries
of the eyes and nose to create neat facial features.
You can use your felting needle to shape the facial features,
especially around the nose and eyes to give it better definition.

Wrap approx 10 counts of white

yarn at a ⅓ position, tightly in a small bunch.
This side will be the chin.
The other side is the top of the head.

2 Pink inside of the nose

Wrap one layer of pink, starting in the

middle of the white nose and extending
a little more towards the chin end.

3
More White

Wrap over the pink with more white and

5 Eyes

Wrap black yarn in the middle, adding

the yarn tightly on top of each other
in one spot to create round eyes.
Wrap approx. 15 times.

6
The Rest of the face

Add more yarn all over to cover the eyes

and until your Pom Maker is completely full.
Optionally, you can wrap some additional
white yarn at the chin end, or wrap entirely
with the face color.

7 The ears

Put your finger lightly over the head end.

Wrap more face yarn over your finger

approx. 18-20 times.

Now the first half is complete!

The second half

8 Wrap the other half of your Pom Maker

in face yarn. This will be the back of
the rabbit’s head.

Tip
Hold two or three strands of yarn
together to speed up your wrapping.

a. Separate the pink yarn in the middle
of the nose from the white yarn and
cut the pink yarn very short. a. b.
Use small sharp scissors for
accurate cutting.

Divide the white yarn into 3 parts

around the pink yarn.
Carefully trim this white yarn shorter
towards the pink center to
create a ‘dip’ in the middle.

b. Gently squeeze the 3 parts together towards the centre and poke with
a felting needle a few times from all sides to fix it.

12 The Ears

Separate the ear yarns equally into two bunches.

Working on one ear at a time, hold the yarn together

in a flat, ear shape.
Poke the yarn with your felting needle from the sides,
going through each yarn from one to the next to
bond them together.
Take care of the sharp needle –
Do it very slowly and carefully.

Repeat on the other ear. Trim to shape.

13
Final Touch

Keep trimming with big & small scissors until you’re happy.
A good place to put extra effort in is around the eyes.
The eyes will always look better if you give a more precise trim around them.

Start with one half of the Pom Maker. You'll be holding 2 arc pieces held together.

1 The Nose

Wrap approx 18-20 counts of black

in the middle, but slightly off to one side.
Wrap it tightly covering approx.
a fingertip width.

2 Mouth

Wrap one layer of dark brown yarn right

next to the nose, about half way towards
the right end of the Pom Maker.

Muzzle

3 Wrap your muzzle yarn all over the nose

and mouth.

Start from above the nose and wrap

all the way to the other end.
It will cover approx. 2/3 of the Pom Maker.
Build up about 5 layers.

Face - part 1

Now wrap some of your main face yarn

on the exposed area of the Pom Maker.
Overlap the muzzle yarn slightly
as you do it.

The Eyes

5 Wrap black yarn very tightly where the

two colors meet.
Wrap about 12 times in a very small spot.

The side with the eyes will be the top of

6 The Face - part 2

Now wrap the brown yarn for the face

all over.
Continue building many layers until
your Pom Maker is full.

7
The Ears

Put your finger lightly over the head end

(the side with the eyes).

Wrap more brown yarn over your finger

approx. 18-20 times.

The Second Part

8 Wrap the other half of your Pom Maker

in solid brown yarn.
This will be the back of the bear’s head.

9 Finishing

Bring the two halves together.

Put your donut frosting on each side.
Cut and tie.
Take out the Pom Maker pieces.

10 Trimming
The bear will be looking quite rough at this stage. We're now ready to trim it!

First trimming tip

Be careful not to trim the muzzle yarn or the nose.

The nose will be the highest point of the bear's face (point a)
so do not trim it.

Trim around the Eyes

Start by cutting yarn away around and above the eyes. (area A)
Trim plenty to shorten the yarn in this area.

9 The Nose & Muzzle

Gather the muzzle and nose yarn

together with your fingers.
Poke with a felting needle through this,
from outside towards the center.
Repeat until the nose and muzzle are
nicely held together and shaped.

You can also now trim the muzzle yarn

slightly and carefully around the nose
(see the profile diagram
on the previous page).

10
Felting the Mouth

Split apart the dark yarn under

the nose into two halves.
Felt each side until both sides
are neatly divided.

Felting the Chin

11 Push up the muzzle yarn below the
mouth (on the chin) upwards.
You’ll now have the muzzle yarn
separated by the darker yarn
in an upside-down ‘Y’ shape.

Poke your felting needle from

the bottom towards the mouth .

Trim along the mouth line and tidy up.

12 Felting the ears

Hold each ear yarn bunch together neatly.

Move your felting needle through the yarn
from the sides to bond each yarn to one another.

Be very careful.
Do this slowly and don’t get distracted –
felting needles are very very sharp!
Wear a thimble and use a foam block
to felt against if you can.

Continue felting until all the yarn’s bonded.

Cut them into round ear shapes.

13 Finishing touches

Continue to refine your bear until you’re happy with it!

Trim yarns that stick out with small scissors – especially
the boundaries of the eyes and nose to create neat facial features.
You can use your felting needle to shape the facial features,
especially around the nose and eyes to give it better definition.

I don't understand the steps in the tutorial.

We recommend trying some easier pompom designs first

Trouble if you're not familiar with pompom craft or our diagrams.
shooting
Here are some ideas:
Pom Pom Eye
Pom Pom Dog

Of course, make sure to watch our video tutorial alongside

where you can see each step in action.

My pompom looks too rough.

Normally this happens if not enough yarn is wrapped

and/or if you need more trimming.

Try to wrap more yarn until the Pom Maker is really full
Wrap each step tightly and neatly.

Also the more you trim, the more defined and dense your
pompom will look. So simply continue trimming more.

My pompom loses yarn when pulled.

Try using waxed thread if you haven't yet.

Tying the pompom very tightly with waxed thread will prevent
yarn shedding. It will also help make your pompom more dense.
