DIN vs ISO
• Currently more DIN parts sold
• DIN standards withdrawn
• Switching to ISO
• Issues and timeline
Fastenal Product Standard (FPS)

Note: Dimensional, Mechanical, and Finishing

specifications are all listed for you

If you can’t find the information you need

contact: engineer@fastenal.com or your local
branch
Calling Standards out on Prints

• Do you dimension your print?

• Do you reference a standard revision year?
• How do you handle revisions?
• Internal Standards that differ from industry consensus?
• Flagnotes
Bolts vs. Screws
• Generally have markings on the head of the bolt and at various
locations on a nut to show the grade of the fastener
• Bolts are intended to Stretch to create a clamping force

• Screws generally are not required to have a head marking

• Screws are intended to sit flush, over torque will cause stripping
not snapping
Machine Screw vs. Case Hardened
• Machine screws not hardened
• Case Hardened product cuts, rolls, forms
• Issues with thread case hardened screws are
generally pilot hole size related
• Issues with Self Drilling screws are generally
material thickness vs. point style related
Markings
Most bolts made to industry standards
have head markings that reference the
standard
Some sizes (no room on head)
Grades (low carbon)
Head Styles (socket head)
Screws are generally not marked
Imperial (Inch) Series Identification

ASTM A307A

Graded Bolts Must have a Head Marking

Machine Screws ASTM A193 B7**

ASTM A325

*Tensile 100,000 + but low yield strength makes effective strength similar to low carbon product
** Actual tensile 125,000 psi
Inch Stainless
• ASTM F593 governs stainless hex cap screws
• Alloy groups 1 and 2
• Material conditions- A, CW, SH

• ASTM F594 governs stainless hex nuts

Metric Stainless
• ISO 3506-1 governs metric stainless bolts, they will be marked with a
grade (type of steel) and property class (strength) and a mfg. mark
• A2=18-8 types of austenitic steel
• A4= 316 material
• A3 and A5 are stabilized versions of A2 and A4
Imperial (Inch Series) Nuts

SAE J995 Grade 2 SAE J995 Grade 5 SAE J995 Grade 8

ASTM A563-A

Always mate with like grades! Commonly we see folks using

grade 5 hardware and mating with grade 2 nuts.
We want the bolt to be the weakest point of the assembly.
Metric Nuts
Washers
• Hardened washers must have a manufacturer’s mark
• F436 is the most recognized hardened washer spec
• Most hardened washers will still be made to the mechanical
properties of F436
• Soft washer will typically have no marking
Section 1 Recap
• Most fasteners are made to a standard
Properties Covered: Dimensions, Mechanical, and Finish

• Hardened fasteners have markings

• Most unhardened fasteners don’t have markings

• Sticking with industry standards when possible provides you with:

• Most cost effective solution
• A tangible set of parameters to hold that fastener to in terms of
properties
