1.0 Introduction

The Sparta people were warrior members of ancient Greece that were unique in their values,

religion, art, societal organization, and gender affiliation.

2.0 History

They were mainly warriors that rose in rank due to their victory in the Peloponnesian war against

Athens. The Spartans emphasized loyalty to the state and military, even for young boys of seven

years of age (Daszuta, 2018). Education on loyalty, discipline, and endurance was for all citizens

regardless of gender. Due to their military emphasis, manual labor fell into the hands of the slave

part of the population known as the Helots and Perioeci. The latter were neither slaves nor

freemen but worked to supply weapons for Spartans.

3.0 Cultural context

3.1 Represented in the US

The Spartans emphasized war and diplomacy and forgot to tend to their other pressing issues

such as arts, philosophy, and literature. The slaves were the backbone of the economy of Sparta,

without whom the nation would not survive.

3.2 Individualistic/ Collective

The Spartans were a collective society that focused on the satisfaction of societal needs above

the individuals. The social organization comprised three main groups; the Spartans, who were

entirely citizens, the Helots or slaves, and the Perioeci.

3.3 Artistic
HEALTH SCIENCES AND NURSING 3

The Spartans did not pay attention to art like other Ancient city-states like Athens. In fact, the

only profession for a full male citizen was a soldier.

3.4 Values

The core values of society were duty, discipline, endurance, and self-control.

3.5 Religion

Spartans' religion was polytheistic since they believed in many ancient Greece gods like Apollo

and Artemis Orthia (Parker, 2014).

3.6 Sex and Gender Roles

Spartan women were not restricted from engaging in other activities except war. They received a

formal education, participated in various sports like a javelin, and owned property. Unlike other

Greek societies, Spartan women were not restricted to the traditional roles of home-keeping.

Instead, the slaves took care of such responsibilities (Wagner, 2020).

3.7 Acculturation

The major thing to know about the Spartan society is their value of military prowess and

commitment to the state.

4.0 Conclusion

The Spartans were unique from other Ancient Greece cities because they abandoned art,

emphasis on war, and women's treatment.
