ANOINTING OF THE

SICK
presentation by: kylene cabuang, kenstle ferrer, and primo

I. WHAT IS THE SACRAMENT ALL ABOUT

During an illness, especially near the time of death, the anointing of the sick is
performed to bring spiritual and even physical power. Most certainly, it is one of
the last sacraments that one can get. A sacrament is an external symbol set up
to confer inner grace by Jesus Christ. In more simple words, it is a ritual that is
done by the influence of the Holy Spirit to transmit the grace of God to the
recipient.
II. BIBLICAL TEXT
James 5:14

Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders
of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him
with oil in the name of the Lord;

Hebrews 1:9

“You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;

Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of
gladness above Your companions.”
III. MATTER AND FORM

MATTER: Anointing with the Oil of the Sick.

FORM: “Through this holy anointing may the

Lord in his love and mercy help you with the
grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees
you from sin, save you, and raise you up.”
IV. MINISTER/S

Only a priest or bishop, or Presbyterian minister, can administer the

sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick, but a lay person
may give a dying person Holy Communion as "Viaticum, the Last
Sacrament of the Christian”.

This is rooted in the Scriptural reference to the minister of the

sacrament as the presbyter. The ministerial priest serves as a
spokesman for the entire church in Catholic theology and has authority
given by Christ for the pastoral care of souls.

It is the responsibility and right of pastors and those in charge of the

spiritual care of souls to administer the sacrament to those entrusted to
their care. Any priest can administer the sacrament with the presumed
permission of the pastor, or if there is fair cause. In cases of need, every
priest is allowed to bring the blessed oil for administering the sacrament.
V. EFFECT/S
It provides courage, strength, and peace in the face
of illness. It helps the sick person to trust in God no
matter what happens. It gives the sick person grace
to unite his or her suffering to the passion of Christ. It
provides physical and/or spiritual healing according to
God's will.

In order for the dying person to prepare for death, it

provides required graces. Consolation and optimism
are running through. And if the sick person is too ill to
receive the sacrament of reconciliation, it offers an
opportunity to forgive sins.
VI. SIGNS AND SYMBOLS USED AND ITS
MEANING

Candles are often lit at the priest’s arrival. It is Christ who is the Light of the
World and by lighting the candles it shows Christ is present.
A cross or crucifix are present at the time of anointing, so the sick can feel at
one with God. Both the crucifix and candles are part of the “Sick Call Set”.
A stole is worn by the priest as he administers of the sacrament of Anointing of
the Sick.
Oil is used in this sacrament to represent Jesus’ healing grace. The Twelve
Apostles, used oil to anoint the sick and many were cured (Mark 6:13).
An olive branch is a symbol of the consolation of the Holy Spirit. The olive
branch is often shown carried by a dove, a symbol of the Holy Spirit. It is the
Holy Spirit who brings comfort and peace. “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you
forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone’s sins, they are
retained.” (John 20:22-23)
The laying of human hands on the sick symbolises comfort and the power of
God entering the sick person through the meditation of the priest.
The Eucharist symbolises the eternal life and the Body of Christ and is
sometimes given when the sick is anointed.
VII. FACTS AND TRIVIA ABOUT THE
SACRAMENT

Catholics believe the Anointing of the Sick sacrament can:

Give the sick person the courage and strength they will need
to go through the pain or suffering of their illness

Forgive the person's sins, if the person is too sick to make a

confession (tell the priest about the sins he has done in his
life, ask for forgiveness, and say prayers to show he is
sorry)
