ILO 5. Understand, analyze and solve problems relating to Heat Exchanger design.
1. Analyze and solve practical problems in Heat Exchanger design.
A. Solve the Problems clearly.
1. Heat is transferred from hot water to an oil in a double pipe counter flow heat exchanger. Water
enters the inlet pipe at 100°C and exits at 50°C while the oil enters the inner pipe at 30°C and exits at
45°C, calculate the log mean temperature difference.
GIVEN:
Thw,in= 100°C ∆ T a=100 ℃−45 ℃=55 ℃
Thw,out= 50°C ∆ T b=50 ° C−30℃ =20 ℃
To,in = 30°C
To,out = 45°C
SOLUTION:

2. An ice plant of 200 tons of refrigeration capacity makes use of the shell and tube superheat remover.
The temperature discharge is 112°C and the vapor is cooled to 52°C. Water enters at 24°C and is
heated to 70°C. Determine the log mean temperature difference. If the overall coefficient of heat
transfer U is 390 kJ/hr-m2-°C and the heat transferred is 6,550.5 kJ/min, find the required surface
area of tubes.
GIVEN:
m = 200 tons
Tc,in= 24°C ∆ T a=112℃ −70℃ =42 ℃
Tc,out= 70°C ∆ T b=52 ° C−24 ℃=28 ℃
Th,in = 112°C U = 390 kJ/hr-m2-°C
Th,out = 52°C q = 6,550.5 kJ/min

enthalpy of 2,240 kJ/kg. The condensate has an enthalpy of 218.69 kJ/kg. Circulating cooling water
enters the condenser at 25°C and leaves at 45°C. The outside and inside diameter for a water tube:

is 14,100 kJ/hr-m2-°C of outside tube surface determine, a) the amount of circulating water in m 3/hr,
b) the total number of tubes, and c) the length of tube per pass.
GIVEN:
