The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in
which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Understand the basic principles of graphics and layout;
2. Create an original or derivative ICT content to effectively communicate a visual
message in an online environment;
3. Upload and share image using various online social media platforms;

2
What is It

Introduction: Communication has evolved from a simple text and other type-written
messages to graphical images depicting or containing essential information from which
the viewers can have a grasp or understand from what the image wanted the viewers to
understand. We have discussed from the previous module some useful tips in creating
your effective PowerPoint Presentation; which will help you in this module.

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GRAPHIC AND LAYOUT

1. BALANCE. The visual weight of objects, texture, colors, and space is evenly
distributed on the screen. It is also essential because it allows your creation look
more professional.

2. EMPHASIS. An area in the design that may appear different whether in size,
texture, shape or color to attract the viewer’s attention. This is used to emphasize
a particular portion in your creation.

3. PATTERN, REPITITION, AND RYTHEM. These are repeating visual elements on

an image or layout to create unity in the layout or image. Rhythm is achieved when
visual elements create a sense of organized movements.

4. PROPORTION. Visual elements create a sense of unity where they relate well with
one another. This also agrees with the balance within the layout or image to obtain
a more simple yet powerful and attracting creation. For example, use larger font
size to emphasize titles or headings to make the viewer’s draw more attention to
what is being emphasized.

5. VARIETY. This uses several design elements to draw a viewer’s attention.

INFOGRAPHICS
Information graphics or infographics are used to represent information, statistical
data, or knowledge in a graphical manner usually done in a creative way to attract the
viewer’s attention. It is a collection of images, charts, with a touch of minimal texts to give
the viewer an easy-to-understand overview from a certain topic. It is used to make
complex data look easier to the viewer’s eyes and visually appealing.

Taking into consideration about the internet performance in your area, we are
going to use some alternative software in creating your infograph. Premium and free
infograph software may cause you to use internet data. However, some alternative
software will not only save you money, it will also give you the same experience as those
that are offered online. Adobe Photoshop is the king when it comes to creating infograph
and other graphical layout containing useful information. Adobe Photoshop boasts its
powerful tools in creating and editing graphical materials as well as it can also be used
even offline.

Do you still remember “Mang Kanor’s Organic Milk Tea” from our previous
module? We can use it as basis for your first infograph.

Follow this step-by-step to create your infograph.

3
Figure 1. Dashboard of Adobe Photoshop ready for content editing.
From the dashboard, click ctrl+n to create a blank sheet as shown below.

Once you have done so, it will prompt you to create a blank sheet. From here, create your
sheet by indicating your paper size (height, width) and rename it to “infograph” and click
“OK”. You should have your blank sheet by now.
Next, create your business title (Mang Kanor’s Organic Milk Tea) by clicking the text
command located from the left command panel.

Now that you have your business title on top of your sheet, you can now insert a
sample image of your product as shown below. Leave the background empty for the
moment.

4
If your image appears too large, you can click on that image and resize by simply using
the shortcut ctrl+T and adjust according to your preferred size. Just make sure the image
will not be too large to allow some space for other texts to fit in to your sheet.
Now that you have your title and sample product placed into the sheet, it is now time
for you to add some additional information such as contact numbers, address, open hours,
etc.
Repeat the same steps in inserting texts to your sheet using the insert text command.

What does your sheet look like? For sure your sheet looks like what is shown above. Now
that you have some basic and essential information being included, it is now time for you
to insert image background to ad beauty and essence to your layout. Background images
may be available from the internet from which you can download or you can choose from
your gallery to insert into. But, always bear in mind those useful tips as mentioned above
to make your infograph more attracting.

5
To add images to your sheet, use the command ctrl+O to open image document from your
laptop or desktop device. After doing so, it will open a window containing some image
materials available on your device. Click “ok” or press “enter’ from your keyboard to
proceed. Next, click on that image on the window and on your mouse cursor, drag and hold
that image to transfer to the other sheet. Repeat this process for inserting image as
necessary. See image below.

The figures as shown above is a comparison how do image quality varies from raw image
to converted final image as an output. It shows a simple and basic style in creating
infographics using a combination of text and images to form as a whole. When editing some
picture or background images may not suit or unify with each other. Feel free to add or
remove some unnecessary images to make your piece more meaningful and satisfying.
From the image above, the tea cup has been replaces by a hand of milk tea to advertise
what your product looks like.
