“TEXTILE WEAVING PATTERN”


Arts and Crafts of Ilocos Region and Cordillera Autonomous (CAR)
ILOCOS REGION
 Inabel is a hand weaving technique of the Ilocanos that is produced using
traditional wooden looms.The different designs represent different meanings:the
dizzying binakol weave represents the waves of the sea.They believe that this
design protects them from bad spirits.
PANGASINAN
 The arts and crafts of Pangasinan include the smoothly woven Bolinao mats made
from buri or raffia leaves ,and the bamboo crafts od San Carlos.
Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR)
BENGUET
 They are famous of their tinalik baskets made from rattan.
KALINGA
 One of the finest products is their textile which is characterized by red stripes and
white ,yellow and black geometrical patterns.The southern Kalinga women wear the
wrap around skirt or tapis called kain which reaches below the knee.The northern
Kalinga wear saya, an ordinary woamns skirt covering the body from the waist to
feet.
 The basketry of the Kalinga is what we called labba a bowl shaped basket made
from rattan with sizes that vary from 20-150 cm in diameter.
 Tattooing is another form of art of Kalingas.It signifies a rite of passage from youth
to adulthood,a mark of heroism and bravery and ones status in the community
IFUGAO
 Weaves a loin-cloth called ikat which is actually Indonesian term,meaning to bind
together.Weaving in Ifugao is an exclusive for women at least two women are
needed to make the long and tedious preparation for weaving.One example is their
hunters back pack made of fibers.
 The Ifugaos are also great basket weavers.T hey also known for amulets that are
made of beads , gold, bronze, and other materials.this amulets called lingling-o/
dinumug used as fertility symbols and worn around the neck.
MOUNTAIN PROVINCE
 The province is known for their Kadangayan burial cloth for rich people.Only
grandmothers are allowed to weave it during the olden times.
 The people of Bontoc are also great weavers.Their cloth fabrics are used for
blankets and clothing called siniwsiwan.
 The mens traditional attire-the G-string-is called wanes.The women use a short
and narrow wrap-around skirt called lufid , which extends from the navel to the
knees and has a side opening.

both highlands and lowlands. Identify the similarities and differences based on the designs,
patterns, colors and materials used through a Venn Diagram.

QUEZON
 The town of Lucban in Quezon is famous for its Pahiyas Festival every 15 th of May
in honor to San Isidro Labrador-the patron saint of the farmers.
 During the festival,the towns people decorate their houses with produce and
colorful thin rice wafers called kiping.The kiping is made from ground glutinous rice
that is thinly coated on mature leaves and steamed over low fire.
 Aside from Lucban,nearby municipalities have their own version of Pahiyas such as
Pabitin,San Isidrohan,Aranya, and many more.
BICOL REGION
 Is known for its baskets,bags,slippers,coin purses and other crafts that are made
from abaca and raffia fibers.The abundance of these natural fibers in the region
allowed the Bicolanos to excel in weaving.

 Married women of Bontoc and Kankanay in the Northern Cordillera wear a type of
belt called ginaspala wanes.
 The Bontocs create their textile patterns through the ikat-weaving method.

BATANES
 Vakul is a headgear used by the Ivatan women to protect them from the heat of the
sun and rains.The men,on the other hand wear soot,a rain cape made from fronds
that cover the upper part of the body down from the neck.This special clothing is
made up of woven fibers of the vuyavuy palm-a plant similar to coconut.
NUEVA VIZCAYA
 The Gaddangs are known for their craft and textiles.Bakwat is a belt used by the
mothers are giving birth.This cloth is usually adorned on the central portion with
white beads as accent patterns of rivers and mountains.
BULACAN
 Includes Singkaban,pastillas wrapper, fire crackers and goldsmithing in
Meycauayan.
PAMPANGA
 Is known for its giant lanterns or parol.

RIZAL PROVINCE
 Angono in Rizal province is considered as the Art Capital of the Philippines .
 It is also known for its higantes.
TAAL,BATANGAS
 The burda called calado,is painstakingly made by three groups of people- the
designer, the embroiderer and the cutter.
 The balisong is also known as a butterfly knife.Its name is derived from bali,the
Filipino term for broken, and sungay which means horn.This is a type of knife
that can be folded closed like a fan and comes in different sizes.
