9. Chloroform is stored in closed dark coloured bottles completely filled so that air is kept out. 1
Justify.
HO-CH2-CH-CH2-OH
11. Write the equation of reaction for the preparation of phenol from cumene. 1
13. Assertion: In monohaloarenes, further electrophilic substitution occurs at ortho and para 1
positions.
Reason: Halogen atom is a ring deactivator.
A. Both assertion and reason are correct statements, and reason is the correct explanation
of the assertion.
B. Both assertion and reason are correct statements, but reason is not the correct
explanation of the assertion.
C. Assertion is correct, but reason is wrong statement.
14. Assertion: Phenol is more reactive than benzene towards electrophilic substitution reaction. 1
Reason: In the case of phenol, the intermediate carbocation is more resonance stabilized.
A. Both assertion and reason are correct statements, and reason is the correct explanation
of the assertion.
B. Both assertion and reason are correct statements, but reason is not the correct
explanation of the assertion.
C. Assertion is correct, but reason is wrong statement.
Section B
16. What type of azeotropic mixture will be formed by a solution of acetone and chloroform? 2
Justify on the basis of strength of intermolecular interactions that develop in the solution.
17. State Raoult’s law for a solution containing non -volatile solute. How it is related to Henry’s 2
law?
18. Give a chemical test and write the chemical equations to distinguish between the pairs of 2
compounds:
20. Will the elevation in boiling point be same if 0.1 mol of sodium chloride or 0.1 mol of sugar is 2
dissolved in 1L of water? Explain.
OR
Why do gases always tend to be less soluble in liquids as the temperature is raised?
Section C
21. Give the mechanism of preparation of ethyl alcohol from ethene by acid catalyzed hydration. 3

23. Calculate the freezing point of an aqueous solution containing 10.5 g of MgBr 2 in 200 g of 3
water (molar mass of MgBr2= 184g mol-1,Kf for water=1.86 K kg mol-1,MgBr2 is 80dissociated)
24. 420 g of liquid A(molar mass 140 g/mole) was dissolved in 900 g of liquid B ( molar mass 180 3
g/mole). The vapour pressure of pure liquid B was found to be 500 torr. Calculate the vapour
pressure of pure liquid A and its vapour pressure in the solution, if the total vapour pressure
of the solution is 487.5 torr.
A. Etard reaction
B. Aldol Condensation
C. Rosenmund reduction
OR
A. B.

b. Benzyl chloride → Benzyl alcohol.
27. An organic compound (A) with molecular formula C8H8O forms an orange-red precipitate 5
with 2, 4-DNP reagent .and gives yellow precipitate on heating with iodine in the presence of
sodium hydroxide. It neither reduces Tollens’ or Fehlings’ reagent, nor does it decolourises
bromine water or Baeyer’s reagent. On drastic oxidation with chromic acid, it gives a
carboxylic acid (B) having molecular formula C7H6O2.Identify the compounds (A) and (B) and
explain the reactions involved.
OR
An organic compound (A) (molecular formula C8H16O2) was hydrolysed with dilute sulphuric
acid to give a carboxylic acid (B) and an alcohol (C). Oxidation of (C) with chromic acid
produced (B). (C) on dehydration gives but-1-ene. Identify the compounds A, B and C and
Write equations for the reactions involved.
