Activity 3

Pre - colonial architecture

Philippine has a vast history due to what happen centuries ago. Even though that there are many
things that happen in the philippines some of the historical building stay intact and still standing
today. Reading the different kinds of architecture of the philippines in Pre colonial I learned that our
ancestor were self suficient before. They know how they can utilize their materials just by using the
nature.

The first ever house that our ancestor use was the cave. The historian discover that the first people
who live here in the Philippines uses the cave as their house and shelter. The particular reason for
circumstances Petroglyphs, Ango-Binangonan, Rizal –consist of 127 human and animal figures
engraved on the rockwall of a shallow cave, a shred of concrete evidence that caves became places of
dwellings and refuge for the early human settlement in the Philippines. The Tau’t Batu an Indigenous
Filipinos who continue the primeval practice of living in caves to this date.

While the Idjang Rock-hewn fortresses, is a Fortified mountain and served as their early settlements,
and that they drank sugar-cane wine or palek. Archeological evidences also suggest that they used
gold as currency, they were also seafarers and boat builders, and produced a thriving agriculture-
based industry. There were four idjang discovered in different parts of Batanes. There are also called
the lean-to of the Agta of Palanan which was both roof and wall, suited the lifestyle of the native

While reading the module there are still varieties of early architecture dwellings. The old dwelling
styles here in the Philippines are not the same, every province or places in the Philippines have their
own style of historical architectural design like Ivatan house. There are also different kinds of Ivatan
house like Jinjin House and the Niriñidin, Itbayat’s, the Jinjin is derived from the Ivatan Term for the
Cogon Wall. Made Mainly out of cogon and reeds resting on wooden posts that serve as storage
until it’s time to leave for the mainland. Then the Niriñidin, Itbayat’s is a variation of Jinjin house it is
Slightly varied and predominantly functions as a house than a temporary shelter. It is Built of more
durable material, the Exterior Walls, Wood Planks and Clad with Cogon to provide added protection
from weathering for the wooden wall. The Thick walls assembly also serves as a thermal barrier in

The Torogan is a Traditional Maranao house, ancestral residence of the datu and his extended family.
The Torogan is a symbol of high social status. Such a residence was once a home to a sultan or datu in
the Maranao community.

Here are some of the low land vernacular houses here in the Philippines. The Luma Traditional
Badjao land house. The Lepa Traditional Badjao boath-house, it has loose and detachable structure.

Djenging, has outriggers, roofed, walled in on all sides by wooden boards. And the Dapang or Vinta,
not roofed, only used for fishing and short trips.

Next is the bahay kubo or nipa hut, is a type of stilt house indigenous to the cultures of the
Philippines. This house is a Traditional lowland dwelling, northern and central regions due to its
materials it has a passive cooling effect.
