Quarter 1-Module 3, Week 3:
Division of Fractions

Module 5 Division Involving Whole Numbers and Simple

Fractions
What I Need to
After completing this lesson, you are expected to:
a. perform the activities that involve whole numbers and fractions;
b. divide simple fraction by whole number and vice versa and
c. divide simple fraction by another fraction in simple form

What’s New

Take a look at this problem below.

After receiving the Social Amelioration Subsidy from the government, Mang Juan
1
bought 5 kilograms of rice. He wanted to share kg to each of his neighbors who did not
2
receive any subsidy. How many neighbors do you think he has given rice?

What did Mang Juan receive?

What did he do with what he received?
How many neighbors do you think he has given rice?
Represent the 5 kg of rice by block

What is It

Let us use the blocks below to show how many halves can we make in 5 kilograms.

Now, try to cut the blocks in halves to show how many neighbors did Mang Juan has given rice.

So,
1
5÷ = _________ There are _____ halves in five whole units.
2
There is also another way of solving this problem.
1
5÷ = _________
2
1 1 2
Let us take the reciprocal of . The reciprocal of is .
2 2 1

The reciprocal is the multiplicative inverse of each other. In other words, simply interchange
the numerator and denominator to make it equal to 1.

1 2 1 2
Multiplying the number and its reciprocal, we have x = 1. So, and are
2 1 2 1
reciprocals or multiplicative inverse of each other.

Let us now solve the equation:

1
5÷ = _________
2

5 1 5 2
÷ = x Multiply the dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor.
1 2 1 1

5× 2
= Multiply the numerators and then the denominators.
1× 1

10
= = 10 There are 10 halves in 5 kilograms.
1
So, there are 10 neighbors Mang Juan has given rice.
Let’s Be Informed:
To divide fractions, rewrite the division as a related multiplication in which you multiply the
dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor.

3 3
Example: Divide : ÷ =
7 5

3 3 3 5
÷ = × Multiply the dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor.
7 5 7 3
3x 5
= Multiply the numerators and the denominators.

Module 6 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF

DECIMAL NUMBERS

What I Need to
Know
In this lesson, you are expected to:
1. add and subtract decimals and mixed decimals through ten thousandths without or with
regrouping.
2. write the sum / difference through ten thousandths correctly.

What’s In Know

Remember:
In estimating the sum and difference of decimal numbers, first round off the
decimal numbers to the nearest whole number, then add or subtract the rounded
numbers.
Example: Estimate
6.745 ----7 476.932 ----- 477
+ 3.29 ----3 -- 234.274 -----234
4.536 ----5 243 is the estimated difference
15 is the estimated sum

What’s New

Amidst health crisis, the frontliners of Tubod, Lanao del Norte took
temperature testing to all market goers. Using a thermal scanner, people who went
inside the market were tested and their temperature readings were recorded. This
activity was done to determine if a person was having a fever which was one of the
symptoms of Corona Virus Disease 2019 or CoViD-19 Pandemic. The table below
shows temperature reading of 6 persons.

PERSONS TEMPERATURE
PERSON 1 36.35 0 C
PERSON 2 35.29 0 C
PERSON 3 39.53 0 C
PERSON 4 38.21 0 C
PERSON 5 34.96 0 C
PERSON 6 36.49 0 C
If the normal body temperature is 37 0 C, what is the combined temperature of persons with
fever? How much greater is the 3rd person’s temperature than the normal body temperature?

What is It

How do you solve or answer the questions in the problem above?

Here are the steps that will help you solve the problem with possible answer.
“If the normal body temperature is 37 0 C, what is the combined temperature of persons
with fever? Combined means ‘total’, so we need to add.
In answering, 39.53 0 C + 38.21 0 C = N, you need to align the decimal points in a
straight column. Then, add like whole numbers. Lastly, align the decimal points in the sum.
39.53 0 C
0
+ 38.21 C
77.74 0 C is the combined temperature of two persons with fever
How did you know that they have fever?
A person has a fever if his temperature is above the normal body temperature of 370C.
How much greater is the 3rd person’s temperature than the normal body temperature? Much
greater means, “ difference”, So, we need to subtract.
In answering this, first you need to align the decimal numbers in column. Then, put extra
zeros to the right of the decimal numbers (if necessary) to have the same decimal places. Lastly,
subtract like whole numbers by affixing the decimal point in the difference.
39.53 0 C
- 37.000 C
2.530C greater is the temperature of the 3rd person than the normal body temperature.
