Chapter 2: Deciding What's Right: A Psychological Approach

I. INTRODUCTION

“Cura Personalis”

Another famous motto of the Ateneo de Cagayan University, my alma

mater, “Cura Personalis” when translated to English, it means “A person for

others.” This is also one of my guides in terms of life and to my job as well. As a

business development officer, my job is to foresee our products being sold

which offers different brands. One is at Xavier University which is the Getblued

and the other one is located at Centrio Ayala Mall which is the Worship

Generation. Since I am the head for the branches here in Cagayan de Oro,

especially on the Getblued brand, I always train my co-workers at Worship

Generation in order for them to know what are the duties incase I am not

present at WG. Since my schedule is being divided by the two brands, I always

depend on my co-workers' report and information regarding with the WG

brand.

II. BODY

“Making Worship a Lifestyle” is the motto of Worship Generation. Mostly,

my co-workers follow the Christian principles in which it also affects the job

performance. Having colleagues who believes in the word of God makes the

working environment peaceful and very productive. My team at that time, is

one the best teams in the company. Because we get along with each other, one

of my colleagues got pregnant at that time. During her pregnancy period, we

experienced something that is not ethical.

Since I am taught to have a principle of “cura personalis”, I always think

about her well-being. Knowing that she got pregnant, I changed her schedule

into opening, so that she can go home earlier, and I always make sure to avoid

giving her stress. With all considerations, my other colleagues also think the

same. But for some reasons, she abused those considerations. She arrives late,

she always sleeps during working hours, and she always makes excuses as to

not stay at the store. Her actions brought concerns and complain on my other

colleagues. As a head, I must see justice for her actions and also to not forget

her situation because if a mystery shopper saw her actions and report it to the

head office; all of us will be held liable and will receive punishment. I also don't

want to report her without knowing her side because she might lose her job

and will have a hard time in financing her baby. So what I did was confront

her, and ask her reasons for her actions. After that, I seek advice to my Area

Supervisor and they communicated. Instead of firing her, she was asked to

turn down her resignation so that she can still get the separation pay.

III. CONCLUSION

In conclusion, weighing situations that may come after your judgement

is very importance before proceeding into action. Yes, we face ethical dilemmas

especially in our workplace, we must always think ahead and seek advice to
your supervisors so that so will be guided and you know what to do without

sacrificing the relationship that you had with your colleagues.
