1) Miller Indices:
The plane intercepts the 𝒂𝟏 and 𝒂𝟑 -axes at 3𝑎1 and 2𝑎3 and is parallel to the y-axis, so this index
1 1
is 0. The reciprocals of these numbers are 3 , and 2. Multiply by the common denominator 6 to get
the miller indices: (203).

Or let x be the intercept at 𝒂𝟏 and z the intercept at 𝒂𝟑 . Their ratio is

𝑥 3𝑎1
=
𝑧 2𝑎3
𝑎1
𝑥
⟹ = 𝑎2 .
𝑧 3
3
So 𝑎1 /2 and 𝑎3 /3 are the intercepts at 𝒂𝟏 and 𝒂𝟑 , respectively, of a parallel plane. Their
reciprocals, 2 and 3, with 0 for 𝒂𝟐 , form the miller indices: (203).
2) Drawing Miller Indices within a cubic unit cell:
(32̅1)

Note that one of these parallel planes cuts the x-axis at one-third of the length of the edge of the unit cell along the x-axis;
extended, it will cut the y-axis at one-half of the edge of the neighboring cell along the y-axis, and so on.
(3̅31)

(302)

Along x-axis, it's one third of the edge, and along z-axis it's one-half of the edge.

(4̅2̅1̅)

(1̅1̅1̅)

(2̅1̅4̅)

If all three indices are negative, we draw them in the same manner as we would draw their
negatives, that is, (ℎ𝑘𝑙) for (ℎ̅𝑘̅𝑙 ).
̅
3) The plane intercepts the x-axis at 𝑎, the y-axis at 2𝑎, and the z-axis at 2𝑎. The reciprocals of
1 1
these numbers are 1, 2, and 2. Multiply by the common denominator 2 to get the miller indices:
(211).

4) Interplanar spacing:
For a cubic unit cell, interplanar spacing d is given as
𝑎
𝑑ℎ𝑘𝑙 =
√ℎ2 + 𝑘 2 + 𝑙 2
Here 𝑎 = 4.05 A°, so
4.05
𝑑111 = ≈ 2.34 A°,
√3
4.05
𝑑110 = ≈ 2.86 A°.
√2
5) Spacing for FCC Nickel:
The atomic radius is 𝑟 = 0.124 nm. For FCC cell, we know that
1
𝑟= 𝑎
2√2
⟹ 𝑎 = 2√2𝑟
⟹ 𝑎 = 0.351 nm.
For the plane (111), the interplanar spacing is then
0.351
𝑑111 =
√12 + 12 + 12
0.351
=
√3
= 0.203 nm.

6) The angle 𝜙 between planes (ℎ1 𝑘1 𝑙1 ) and (ℎ2 𝑘2 𝑙2 ) in cubic crystals is calculated from the
formula:
ℎ1 ℎ2 + 𝑘1 𝑘2 + 𝑙1 𝑙2
cos 𝜙 = .
√ℎ12 + 𝑘12 + 𝑙12 √ℎ22 + 𝑘22 + 𝑙22
Given are the planes (111) and the plane with x-intercept at a, z-intercept at a, and y-intercept at
2a. The reciprocals of these numbers are: 1, 1/2, and 1. Multiplying each by the common
denominator 2, we have the miller indices: (2,1,2). So the angle between these two planes is
1∙2+1∙1+1∙2
cos 𝜙 =
√12 + 12 + 12 √22 + 12 + 22
5
⟹ cos 𝜙 =
3√3
5
⟹ 𝜙 = arccos ( )
3√3
⟹ 𝜙 = 15.79°.
7) Directions:
