How to Compose with
Modes
Composing with Modes
• You’ve already done it! Major and minor are 2 modes out of 7
• How to use the other modes:
• Same as major or minor, hit the notes in that key (mode)
• Since tonality may be less strong than major or minor, make sure you
establish the tonic (first note, main note) in your piece
C Phrygian
• C minor (natural) has: C D Eb F G Ab Bb C
• C Phrygian has: C Db Eb F G Ab Bb C

• Phrygian is one note different from natural minor, just add a flattened
second

Extra Challenge 1:
Challenge 1: Snow capped mountain

• Compose a piece of music for a game scene where the

player must traverse through this terrain
• The player is cold, hungry and tired but at the same
time they realise just how beautiful their surroundings
are
• Mood: Beauty and hardship
Extra Challenge 2:
Challenge 2: Ambient, sounds, fx

• Compose a game music piece using only ambient

sounds and effects (pads are also accepted)
• You can draw your inspiration from nature, or come
up with something entirely different – artistic,
creative, experimental
• Make sure it’s suitable for a game and loops correctly
Extra Challenge 3:
Challenge 3: Dorian, 5/8

• Compose a game music piece in 5/8 using the Dorian mode

(any Dorian)
• This composition will be used for a cutscene, so it doesn’t
have to loop
• The cutscene plays out like this:
• The main character is in a tavern in a country town. He/she is
locating equipment for their next heist/mission. They have
stumbled across an old enemy and the tension is high – will
they fight?
