Instructions:

Students will be given a real-world scenario that models Heron’s formula.

Students will then write and find the area of triangle with given sides, with
given SAS.

Students will be measuring the dimension of their Majlis and how

to plan to divide it into three areas …

Students will create or make a presentation using the PAGES, POWERPOINT or

Task 1
Situation:

Due to Covid 19. Rules has been established that would ask people to do new
things. One of the things that the government has asked people is to observe
social distancing of 2 m from each other.
Coronavirus: Is social distancing safe at less than two metres? | The National (thenationalnews.com)

Because of this a lot of establishment needs to ensure that their place is able to
ensure that there will be social distancing all around.

Due to the Pandemic as well, the Religious leaders have decided to reduce the
number of people inside the Mosques to limit the people inside.

Because of this a lot of families have decided to separate their Majilis in their
homes.

Task:

You are tasked to come up with a plan on separating the Majilis in your house
into two segments.

1) Total Floor Area of your Majilis in the House. Include a sketch of the
Majilis in your home. You need to show at least 1 triangle in the Majilis
as the common Area.
Length of majlis: 300 meters
width of majlis: 150 meters
floor area of majlis: 45000 m2
2) Find the Area of the Divided parts of the Majilis
Area 1 (blue):
trapezoid area: (b1+b2)*h / 2
b1 = 100m b2 = 300m h= 50m
A=(100+300)*50 / 2
= 10000m2

Area 2 (red):
trapezoid area: (b1+b2)*h / 2
b1 = 100m b2 = 300m h= 50m
A=(100+300)*50 / 2
= 10000m2

Area 3 (green):
isosceles triangle area: b*hb/2
b= 100m h= 200m
area= 100*200/2
= 10000m2

3) Find the length of the dividers

green= √2002 + 502 = 50√17 ≈ 206.16𝑚
blue= √2002 + 502 = 50√17 ≈ 206.16𝑚
red= 300/3 = 100m

4) Prove the Area of the Triangles created from dividing the Majilis using
Herons Formula. Show complete Solution.
Heron’s formula:
s= (a+b+c)/2
A= √𝑠(𝑠 − 𝑎)(𝑠 − 𝑏)(𝑠 − 𝑐)
Triangle green:
a= 50√17 𝑚
b= 50√17 m
c= 100m
s= (50√17 +50√17 +100)/2 = 256.1552813
A=
√256.1552813 ∗ (256.1552813 − 50√17 )(256.1552813 − 50√17 )(256.1552813 − 100)

= 10000 m2
My answer is correct.

Task 2

1. ART Local artists are painting barn quilts at a Community Center. The quilts are each 8 feet by 8 feet. The
symmetrical pattern for a particular barn quilt is shown below.

𝑠𝑖𝑛35 𝑠𝑖𝑛45
=
𝑥 6.5

x= 5.273 ft

a. What is the area of the yellow triangle?

Area= ½ * (5.273*6.5) *sin 100= 16.9 ft2

b. It takes three coats of paint to make a barn quilt. If it takes 3.5 ounces of paint to cover a square foot, how much
paint will be needed for the yellow triangle?

3.5 𝑜𝑧 𝑥
2
=
𝑓𝑡 16.9𝑓𝑡 2

x= 177.45 oz of paint will be needed for the yellow triangle.

2. BLIMP A blimp hovers over a soccer stadium. Players 500 feet apart at opposite ends of the stadium with the
blimp between them measure the respective angles of elevation to the blimp to be 63° and 72°. How high is the
blimp?

3. AVIATION Due to weather conditions, an airplane flies in different directions as shown in the diagram.

a. How far is the airport from the destination city if the direct route is taken?
x= √1452 + 802 − 2(145 ∗ 80) ∗ 𝑐𝑜𝑠110

x= 188 mi
b. What are the measures of the two other angles in the triangle?

𝑠𝑖𝑛110 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥
Ans: = ≈ 46.4°
188 145

180 – 110 – 46.4= 23.6°

4. A surveyor took the following measurements from two irregularly shaped pieces of land. Some of the lengths and
angle measures are missing. Find all missing lengths and angle measures. Round lengths to the nearest tenth and angle
measures to the nearest minute.

D= 76°8’
E= 50°52’
e= 49.5
G= 76°52’
H= 54°8’
